SOC 112 Module Three Worksheet Statuses and Roles After reading Chapter 4 from the textbook, answer the following questions in complete sentences (1–3 sentences per question). Find at least one scholarly resource to support your answers. Your responses will be graded using the Module Three Worksheet Rubric. To complete this worksheet, replace the bracketed text with the relevant information. Status 1 Status 2 Status 3 1. Describe three statuses that you occupy in society. The first status that I occupy in society is that I am female (Ferris, K., & Stein, 2022, p.111). The second status that I occupy in society is that I am a healthcare worker. The third status that I occupy in society is that I am a student. 2. Identify whether each status is ascribed or achieved. The first status that I occupy in society is that I am female, which is an ascribed status. This would be an ascribed status because I was born female and that is unlikely to change. The second status that I occupy in society is that I am a healthcare worker, which is an achieved status because it took a lot of arduous work to gain the certifications and skills to be able to work in an emergency room with patients. The third status that I occupy in society is that I am a student, which is an achieved status as well because I had to work hard to be able to go to school and pay for college. 3. Explain what the role expectations are for each status. There are many role expectations surrounding females around the world. We are expected to be nurturers, petite, gentle, good cooks, pure, and be mothers. The role expectations for healthcare workers have always been high for understanding reasons, but since the covid-19 outbreak, these expectations have become even higher. Now, healthcare workers are expected to be empathetic, hardworking, emotionally strong, smart, and stern. The role expectations for students are to work hard, work in a detailed and timely manner, and stay engaged.
4. Provide one example of role conflict. Role conflict is when two or more roles have contradictory expectations. For example, women are expected to stay pure while also expected to become mothers, but when a woman dates more than a certain number of men throughout her life she is judged or looked at differently. The role expectation of staying pure and becoming a mother contradicts one another because a woman must date multiple men throughout her life to find the right man that will eventually become a father for her children (Ferris, K., & Stein, 2022, p.112). Healthcare workers are expected to stay strong in any kind of situation both physically and mentally but are also expected to show empathy during tough situations. The emergency room is a very hectic place and things are always changing whether it is good or bad. At times when things go wrong and a patient goes into cardiac arrest, healthcare workers shift into focused and hardworking roles versus the usual calm and empathetic roles. Families of patients become understandably impatient to find out what is going on and sometimes get aggressive towards healthcare workers causing them to be stern so they can continue to try to save their patient. These roles conflict because when healthcare workers become stern, they are misunderstood and labeled as uncompassionate. Students are expected to complete coursework for multiple classes while juggling full time jobs, children, families, and other outside life activities. It can be hard at times to continue with so many responsibilities while getting good grades and an education. 5. Provide one example of role strain. Role strain is when there is one contradictory role expectation. For example, mothers are expected to have successful careers while juggling children and other responsibilities. There is a lot of controversy around whether mothers with a present spouse should stay at home with their children or have a successful career, but it is extremely hard for women to juggle all these expectations. It is all a part of patriarchy's scheme to make women feel shame no matter what they do (Ferris, K., & Stein, 2022, p.112). Healthcare workers are expected to have normal lives outside of work, but few people understand that healthcare is a very mentally demanding career and many of us just want to lay around all the time if we are off. Depression is remarkably high within this field of work, so many ER workers go home and need things like therapy to cope or alone time but get backlash from loved ones if they do not interact with friends and family (Fond et al., 2022). Working in the healthcare field 50 hours a week while going to school full time can be incredibly challenging and make it hard to uphold your expectations as a healthcare worker and a student. 6. Provide one example of a status that might be subject to social inequalities. For example, mothers tend to make less money in the Women get 10 weeks on average for maternity leave, but men do not always get paternity leave and if they do Women in healthcare still make 20% less than men in healthcare. I have met many physicians over the last 4 years each female physician Although there are many scholarships out there, not everyone qualifies. When I first enrolled in college, I did not qualify for almost any
workplace, an experience known as the motherhood penalty. it is much shorter (4-6 weeks average). Many would say this is because the mother is healing from the birth unlike the father, but if both parents got the same leave time it would make things much easier for both parents. The father can help care for the baby while the mother is resting and healing properly ( 7 Common Arguments against Maternity Leave — Debunked , n.d.). has voiced how they are treated so much differently than the male physicians and often seen as a weaker doctor because of their gender (dblalock, 2018). scholarships making it hard for me to go because I would have to come up with a lot of money to pay my tuition. For example, high school students receive scholarships for playing a sport, but if you are not interested in sports, you do not have that same opportunity.
