Identify 1–2 developmental challenges that baby Jane may exhibit as a result of parental substance abuse. Explain how these challenges may impact typical developmental milestones. Fetal development begins in the first trimester where critical development occurs such as the brain and heart systems (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, Hessenauer, 2019). For baby Jane, some developmental challenges that can occur due to her mother's substance are heart defects, and breathing problems (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, Hessenauer, 2019). Heart defects can impact baby Jane's development because baby Jane may have to be in the hospital longer, receive long-term medications, which can lead to the lack of motor skills such as lifting her head up. (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, Hessenauer, 2019). Baby Jane's breathing problems can impact her development because she won't be receiving enough oxygen which can prevent her from improving her adaptive skills and social skills (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, Hessenauer, 2019). Describe how the dimensions of the person-in-environment perspective can be applied in this case. The dimensions of the in-environment perspective can apply to baby Jane and her parents because there would need to be understanding of those they hang out with, or the area they live so that the social worker can assist with addressing baby Jane's needs. Identify two practice skills that you as the social worker could employ in working with the parents. As a social worker, two practice skills I would employ in working with the parents is assisting with making sure the mother has access to a pediatrician to ensure that baby Jane has a treatment plan for her issues.
