According to Glenn, what would a society in which caring is valued look like? Outline Glenn’s three elements of a caring society. Do you agree? What would you add, if anything? Is a society that has these three elements realistic? Evelyn Nakano Glenn, a sociologist, in her article “Creating a Caring Society” has proposed a vision for a society in which caring is valued. According to Glenn, a caring society would have three key elements. These elements are as follows: 1. Recognition of Interdependence: This means acknowledging that everyone in society depends on others in some way. It's about recognizing that care is not just a personal responsibility but a collective one. 2. Valuing Care Work: This involves recognizing and appreciating the work of those who provide care, whether it's paid or unpaid. It's about ensuring that care work is adequately compensated and respected. 3. Ensuring Universal Access to Care: This means making sure that everyone, regardless of their social or economic status, has access to the care they need. It's about creating systems and policies that ensure care is available to all. However, I can say that these elements are often discussed in the context of social justice and equality. Adding to Glenn's elements, I would suggest the inclusion of emotional intelligence and empathy as key components of a caring society. These qualities could foster understanding and compassion, further promoting a culture of care. As for the realism of such a society, it's a complex issue. While it's certainly possible to strive towards these ideals, achieving them fully would likely require significant societal change and commitment. However, many societies and communities are already working towards these goals, suggesting that a caring society, as envisioned by Glenn, is not entirely out of reach.
