2 Life Span Interview Examining Human Behavior and the Social Environment (HBSE) is essential to social work since it thoroughly understands human behavior in different social contexts. This comprehension equips social professionals with critical resources to better assist individuals, families, and communities. HBSE distinguishes itself from other social and behavioral sciences by adopting a comprehensive approach that integrates psychological, sociological, cultural, and environmental elements (Zastrow, 2019). Consequently, social workers must customize their interventions to address the distinct requirements of various age cohorts. Social workers should deeply comprehend human behavior and actively support oppressed groups, confronting repressive structures to establish fair and just social conditions. HBSE, with its interdisciplinary and contextual approach, provides social workers with a wide range of skills to comprehend, intervene, and facilitate beneficial transformations in people's lives and broader societal systems (Zastrow, 2019). Introducing Mishan, a charming 75-year-old female of West Indian heritage, hailing from the Caribbean. As the eldest among her seven siblings, she had several domestic duties, such as preparing meals and maintaining the home. The primary source of her close friendships while in the Caribbean were her colleagues, with whom she had a strong connection. During her leisure time, she enjoyed engaging in meaningful interactions with her close relatives and occasionally indulged in beach excursions and meals with her beloved companions and family members. At age 35, during her middle life, she chose to immigrate to the United States to prioritize the well-being of her children. Before relocating, she held a stable position as a nurse at a renowned hospital and relished a pleasant standard of living, which included periodic trips and the

3 pleasures of existence. Although satisfied, Mishan prioritized her children's future and endeavored to offer them many possibilities that exceeded her understanding. Upon abandoning her familiar surroundings, including her friends and family, Mishan was compelled to acclimate to an unfamiliar realm and provide for her four offspring. Regrettably, her visa lapsed six months after she arrived in the US, rendering her and her children without legal documentation. This hindered their ability to obtain resources, such as healthcare and employment prospects, thereby restricting their financial means. To ensure economic stability, Mishan undertook a range of low- skilled occupations, including domestic cleaning, childcare, caregiving for old and disabled individuals, culinary tasks, tidying up excessively cluttered residences, and even doing miscellaneous functions on their behalf. She diligently worked every day of the week and never indulged in personal expenses, prioritizing the payment of bills. Despite her ability to endure, she could not get pleasure from life's simple pleasures as she once did in the Caribbean. She had to continue working to pay her financial obligations. Mishan, in her forties, obtained US citizenship and persisted in the same employment she held upon her initial arrival. At the age of 50, she was involved in a vehicle collision. She was awarded a mere $10,000 in restitution because the responsible driver had a position of influence and was of Caucasian descent. The attorney handling the case opted not to damage their client's public image. Mishan utilized the funds to settle her outstanding credit card debts, completely depleting her financial resources. As a result of her accident, she became incapable of working, leading to the loss of her apartment and necessitating her relocation to live with her children. Currently, in her seventies, she rests in the living room of her grandchild's residence without any tangible evidence of her diligent efforts. Social workers must comprehensively comprehend culture and its role in human behavior and society while acknowledging the inherent qualities present in all cultures (2021). Social workers must comprehend the impact of the social environment on behavior. This understanding is crucial in evaluating clients and gaining insight into potential obstacles, cultural factors, backgrounds, ethnicities, strengths, and the influence of the environment on behavior. It enables the development of effective treatment plans and the provision of appropriate resources. Individuals inhabit diverse surroundings, and it is advantageous to comprehend how these environments influence and shape their actions and overall welfare. They need to acknowledge the circumstances individuals encounter in their social surroundings and their impact on their actions and performance. (Zastrow, et al., 2019). The field of Human Behavior and Social Environment (HBSE) aims to comprehend the intricacies of human behavior, including its various determinants and attributes. It also examines the social context in which behavior occurs, including multiple levels and systems within this environment, and explores their interplay. (Sharma et al., 2022). Mishan's economic standing was adversely affected by her disadvantaged status as a minority in the US, resulting in restricted access to possibilities that are more readily available to persons in more privileged positions. She encountered a substantial disparity in lifestyle between the Caribbean and the US, resulting in remorse over her choice to migrate. Regrettably, her opportunity to regain a strong position in the Caribbean passed, and her relocation to the United States eventually limited her chances for advancement since she had more access to resources in her own country. Mishan has a sense of depression and emptiness as

5 she reflects on her unrealized potential, which is influenced by both environmental and societal limitations. HBSE lays a distinct emphasis on the influence of social environments on determining behavior. Social workers frequently encounter various difficulties and demographics and must comprehend the impact of systems and institutions on individuals. HBSE, in contrast to more narrow disciplines, adopts an ecological framework that considers the interdependence between persons and their surroundings. This expands the scope to encompass families, communities, organizations, and cultures, allowing social workers to discern the underlying reasons behind behavioral problems and provide appropriate solutions (Zastrow, 2019). Mishan's life can be comprehensively understood by examining various aspects of her experiences. One lens through which to understand her is Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, which posits different stages of development throughout the lifespan. Currently, Mishan is in the integrity versus despair stage that entails reflecting on one's life. Mishan's regretful outlook might exacerbate despair as she grapples with the aging process and reflects on her decision to move to the US, which impacted her overall well-being. Another way to understand Mishan is through Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, which highlights how people acquire and utilize knowledge differently. Mishan's emphasis on family as the most crucial aspect of her life exemplifies her cognitive development as she comprehends intricate social relationships and emotional dynamics. However, her aging process and associated physical challenges are evident and affect her daily life. For instance, her accident impedes her ability to perform as she once did, which causes frustration and constraint. Sociologically, Mishan's life experiences reveal how she navigated different social roles and responsibilities over the years. Her identity as a mother shaped her persona and influenced

6 her decision to migrate to the US. Examining Mishan's experiences through these multiple lenses helps us comprehend her life and the challenges she faces in her later years. Recognizing the intricate interplay between biological, psychological, and sociological factors can aid in devising effective strategies to support her well-being and enhance her quality of life.
