Module One Question 1 Do you have any healthy habits? What role have culture and environment played in the healthy or unhealthy habits that you have formed? I do have an unhealthy habit of smoking a tobacco vaporizer. Leading a musician's lifestyle for the last twenty some odd years created many opportunities to share a social "smoke", ultimately creating to a daily habit. After years of living through social stigma, health concerns, the stink, and the overall related expenses, the habit has transformed from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day to relying on one pack of vape cartridges a week. Module One Question 2 Choose a society from the map. Within that society, characterize one of the social science principles we identified in this learning block. As a reminder, the social science principles we focus on in this course are: social roles, social institutions, social norms, and beliefs and values. For example, what is a social role that exists in Okinawa ? Who occupies this role? A social role that exists in Okinawa is that of the respected spiritual leader. Women occupy this role within Okinawan society. This is a serious role as the women are largely in charge of organizing their (often large) families for events, gatherings, and close living situations. Module One Question 3 Provide an example of the environment influencing the population in an area of increased longevity. Then provide an example of the population in that area influencing its environment. Seventh Day Adventists?experience extreme longevity within their community by leading physically healthier lives commonly consisting of plant based diets, regular low intensity exercise, as well as refraining from smoking, and consuming alcohol, and caffeine. At the same time some members of the church have found it stressful socializing and/or leading lives outside of the close-knit community. The cure for some is the cause for others. Module One Question 4 Think about factors affecting your lifestyle in comparison to the areas of increased longevity. Characterize two social science principles in your day-to-day life. Use the two principles that you did not describe in response to the earlier question. For example, you could describe some social norms in your day-to-day life.
The social norm of the (introductory) handshake has been affecting my lifestyle directly during the covid-19 pandemic. When meeting new people it is second nature within American society to essentially touch hands and now the population is being directed by government and health professionals to maintain distance, essentially voiding a global social norm. The social institutions of government and economy changed so much within the year 2020 that many (what would be common) social norms are out of practice causing myself (and I'm sure many others) to feel discombobulated. ? ? ? ?? Module One Question 5 From a social science perspective, what are three factors that shape your day-to-day life? For example, you could describe some factors that influence your social interactions, your access to certain foods, your day-to-day activities, the pace of life in your area, etc. From a social science perspective three factors that shape my day to day life are physical traffic, local seasonal weather, and my family. Being able to navigate through traffic and weather (literally and metaphorically) is a challenge. Consider navigating the physical act of driving and the mental challenges of being behind the wheel, obeying the laws and social norms (courtesies) of the road, and creating enough income from driving (for work deliveries) to be able to provide for my family.? Module One Question 6 Identify two social science issues related to war . Two social science issues related to war are reform to the justice system and the importance of festivals and celebrations for cultural expression. Both of these issues are common themes within war, especially civil war. Looking into the history of America's civil war and you can find many examples of people fighting for equal rights, fighting for what they believe is right, as well as the freedom of expression for all Americans, no matter the color their skin. Module One Question 7 Identify two social science issues related to education . Two social science issues related to education are student inequalities within the financial system and disproportionate funding between educational systems on a national level. The discrepancy between students economic upbringings in this country are huge. The same can be said on a town to town, county to county, and state to state level when comparing the amount of tax dollars given to some and not to others.? Module One Question 8 Recall: what are the five social institutions that we are examining in this course?
The five social institutions that we are examining in this course are economy, family, government, religion, and education. These are the five social science institutions that shape life. Module One Question 9 Identify the social institutions discussed in this reading about India. The social institutions discussed in the reading about India are government, education, economy, and family. The caste system that exists in India has had a major influence on all four of these social institutions.?British Colonialism ?exacerbated the division within the pre- existing caste system and the majority religion of Hinduism has evolved over thousands of years to work within (and with) these social institutions.? Module One Question 10 Choose one of the five social institutions. Describe some of the factors that have influenced this social institution in India. The social institution of family in India has been influenced by hierarchy and traditional values.?Elders hold the (most) authority and all members of the family must show respect to those higher in the family's social hierarchy. From this respect the tradition of arranged marriages became very common. This causes families to become closer and more intertwined as the marriage is a family decision and not necessarily one made by the individual.? Module One Question 11 Use the reading about social institutions in India to identify two social science issues that could be researched further. One social science issue in India that could be researched further would be within family; the pros and cons for traditional arranged marriages versus "love" marriages. Another social science issue that could be researched more would be within education and women's ability to get a job when learning English in school. Module One Question 12 Describe two social norms in Dubai noted in the reading and explain how these social norms may differ from those of the culture that you grew up in.

The social norms in Dubai that differ greatly from those of my culture are the gestures and prayer. In my everyday life I don't have to consider showing the soles of my feet as disrespectful. I am not a muslim so I do not pray five times a day either, "all" commercial activity does not stop for prayers in America. Module One Question 13 What factors shape the social norms in Dubai? Name at least two, and describe how they shape the social norms. Sharia Law and the dress of men and women in Dubai are two factors that shape social norms. Due to Dubai's use of Sharia Law public displays of affection are illegal even for tourists so you will not see those types of things occurring in your day to day. However, you will see men and women dressed in traditional garb (abayas, hijabs, dishdashas) and even foreigners and tourists will want to dress conservatively. The mix of Islamic faith and Government law combined (literally) has created these unique social norms. Module One Question 14 What factors influence your society's social norms? Name at least two social norms that exist in your culture, and describe the factors that influence them. The firm business handshake. America is driven by the societal norm of "a person is only as good as their handshake" (grip). Going about this (simple task) wrong can cost you a job, a promotion, or seriously offend the wrong person for example. Following along with theme is making direct eye contact with the person you are conversing with. In America eye contact during a conversation conveys that one is listening. In other countries eye contact can be seen as disrespectful. Module One Question 15 Based on the reading about Dubai, identify two social science issues that could be researched further. These are?two social science issues that could be researched further. One would be the interpretation of Sharia Law and the social effect on tourists. The other would be Sharia Law and its social effect on fashion.? Module One Question 16 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of a psychologist. What is a question that a psychologist might have about this social science issue?
The social science issue I would like to expand on from (a psychologist's view) above would be Sharia Law in general. So many questions can be formed from this mix of religion and political (government) law. Does an individual living under rules of Sharia Law tend to be less be affectionate behind closed doors because of the strict rules in public society? Module One Question 17 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of a sociologist. What is a question that a sociologist might have about this issue? The social science issue I would like to expand on from (a sociologist's view) above would also be Sharia Law in general. Considering wealth first, are different religious groups of people living under the rule of Sharia Law afforded equivalent educational opportunities and if no where do the discrepancies lie? Module One Question 18 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of an anthropologist. What is a question that an anthropologist might have about this issue? The social science issue I would like to expand on from (an anthropologist's view) would be, to what extent are the patterns and/or norms of Sharia Law impacting the way the people of Dubai see and act in their world?? Module One Question 19 Who occupies the social role of spiritual leader in most Papua New Guinean kinship groups? The "Big Men" occupy the social role of spiritual leader in most Papau New Guinean kinship groups. Although although over the last few decades new government rule has lessened some of their power and influence. Module One Question 20 What are the societal expectations for a woman's social role in Papua New Guinea? What influences these expectations? The social expectations for a woman’s social role in Papua New Guinea are limited. They are
usually defined in terms of their roles with their families , for example a mother or daughter. Women are equals by the written laws of the country but in actual society do not have the same rights as men. Module One Question 21 Within your own society, what social roles do you occupy? What other social roles could you occupy, if you chose to? How much choice does your society give you to occupy different social roles? How much flexibility do you have to fill that social role differently than society expects? Within my own society I hold the roles of boyfriend, son, brother, musician, and delivery driver amongst others. Assuming I can finish my degree I could hold the role of Lead Graphic Designer within a company. Society allows me a lot of choice in what roles I could chose to occupy within society. As an adult without children I feel a tremendous amount of flexibility to fill my social role differently than society expects because the role I fill at this time doesn't have a literal life (other than my own) depending on it.
