2 FAMILY PRESERVATION Strengths within the Wilson-Joseph family and working toward family stabilization and preservation While doing an overview of the case study, a few positive aspects were noted of the Wilson-Joseph family, such as their deep bond as a family, the grandmother's interaction with the grandchildren, and the siblings. Additionally, I see that the mother treats her kids with compassion and that they don't voice any worries about verbal or physical abuse occurring at home. Helping parents become better parents is one way to leverage the strengths of the Wilson- Johnson family to inform efforts to preserve them. The social worker would prioritize helping the parents address any issues including substance abuse or mental health. This can entail offering counseling or making recommendations for other services. Helping the family establish linkages with the resources in the community and their network of extended family is another way to leverage the strengths of this family. This may involve providing the family with ideas and links for developing new channels of communication with their family. Another crucial kind of readiness that can help parents and expectant parents raise successful children is parenting education. (Child Welfare Information Gateway. (n.d.) To avoid needless separation, caseworkers should be informed about the laws in their state, including any paperwork that could be necessary. ( Child Welfare Information Gateway. (n.d.). The next most crucial concerns are the young children's supervision and the lack of food that is supplied for them. This is the most critical concern because negligence of this kind might result in fatalities or major injuries. As mentioned, connecting the family with neighborhood resources like food pantries and daycare centers can be beneficial as it provides an extra pair of
3 eyes to watch over the kids and ensures their well-being. For any parent, finding reasonably priced child care can be a challenge that affects their capacity to pursue further education or keep a job. Caseworkers should assist young parents in applying for these programs by being aware of the possibilities available in their community and state. State and territorial child care subsidy agencies can be found using a locator tool provided by the Federal Office of Child Care. (Child Welfare Information Gateway. (n.d.) Striving to preserve the Wilson-Joseph family Children feel comfortable and secure in a family environment. They are aware that they have support when they need it. This is one of the main arguments in favor of a social worker working to keep the Wilson-Joseph family together, as it will be in the best interests of the kids. Children need their families to give them unconditional love and affection, which is crucial for their emotional and psychological growth. The family is a social institution that plays a number of roles in enhancing societal values. Relationships within the family and each member's place within it serve as the foundation for socialization. Functions create a framework that introduces conditions to each member, hence achieving family structures and learning. Concerns or reservations regarding family preservation work with the Wilson- Joseph family This is a complicated matter that encompasses many factors, including emotional, psychological, and legal considerations when it comes to maintaining family unity when there are substance abuse problems between the parents and the children they are neglecting. Both the social worker and the family must acknowledge the issue and consent to the professional assistance being sought. In this instance, the mother does not appear to recognize that there is an

4 issue with the children's lack of basic needs—food and clothing—as well as neglect. Many scholars, such as Zuravin (1991), contend that any definition of neglect should involve damaging the health or welfare of a child and should not take into account the caregiver's intention to cause harm or level of responsibility. (Child Welfare Information Gateway. (2018) Seeking professional assistance needs to be required and mandated by law. Seeking treatment from experts who specialize in addiction is crucial. This can be challenging because drug addiction frequently results in denial on the part of the addict. According to some CPS agencies, drug misuse may have a role in up to 70% of the child maltreatment cases they handle (Gaudin, 1993). (Child Welfare Information Gateway. (2018)
