1 Sources of Knowledge Sharon Shewmake Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6060: Theory & Clinical Practice Dr. Renata Aloma Hedrington Jones March 3, 2024
2 Sources of Knowledge I answered situations one and two quite differently. The only one I checked on both was number two, which states, “What I heard from other professionals/physicians in informal exchanges.” Easing treatment methods and discussing success among professionals can be beneficial, at least to explore shared ideas further. Nevertheless, I do understand why there is a need for evidence-based practice. Explain how and why your choices differed in Situation 1 and 2 My choices differed in Situations one and two because Situation one is what I am the most familiar with. I have been a licensed substance abuse counselor since 2015. What is suitable for one is not always good for the other. My intuition and experiences have often served my clients better than having an evidenced-based treatment forced upon them. Recognizing that everyone is different and has different needs is a form of validation for the clients. A blanket method for everyone is a recipe for losing many. 12-step recovery groups such as alcoholics anonymous (AA) are evidence-based but do not work for everyone. However, with that said, evidence-based treatments have proven to work. If you work the program, AA does work. For others, sitting in AA rooms for the rest of their lives and being told they will die if they do not is too much to handle. Of course, there is no way to measure the failures of the 12-step method because there is no way to track all that do not return. Medical issues are different. In situation two, I believe I would want hard facts about the number of successful treatments versus the unsuccessful ones. Explain why it is important to use research evidence to support your practice decisions. It is important to use research evidence to support practice decisions because human lives and the quality of those lives are at stake. Then, there are also liability issues. Finally, there is
3 the integrity of the social work field. The best way to ensure all of the above is to use tried and true evidence-based methods. Explain when using theories and research evidence is most appropriate for making clinical decisions. Provide an illustration of this from your fieldwork experience, from something learned in previous coursework, or from a case study you have encountered. Using theories and research evidence is always appropriate when making client decisions. This is not to say that creative practices cannot be utilized along with an evidence- based treatment. Evidence-based theories and research give the clinician the best chance for success and achieving client goals. The evidenced-based practice model encourages social workers to not rely on their assumptions and pushes them to question those assumptions. It empowers them to seek methods that best address client needs (Understanding evidence-based social work, 2021). During my fieldwork back in 2022, I had a client on my caseload who had been homeless for more than thirty years. He was caught with illegal drugs in his room on several occasions. He downplayed the addiction. I finally decided to offer him a residential drug treatment program. Of course, he declined. However, when he was caught for the third time, with approval from the director, we gave him an ultimatum. He could either accept the treatment we were offering him or leave the premises immediately and lose his housing opportunity. The addiction recovery program is based on the 12-step treatment model, and I thought he stood the best chance at success by participating in this program. So, even though I feel like there are many ways to recover from addiction, I believe this evidenced-based program was his best chance for success.
