Assignment 1: Dishing out American Pie 1. Choose 4 people for your mini study. Ask them to self-identify by demographic characteristics such as their social class (egs. highest level of education, type of employment, future career goals), race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, age, etc. Choose which demographic characteristics you think might be important to know, keeping in mind that some people may not feel comfortable sharing personal information. - The 4 people I have selected for my mini study are my mom, my dad, my boss (Rob), as well as my best friend (Zac). My mom’s highest level of education is a bachelor's degree. She currently works in sales for landscape lighting, with future career goals of expanding her clientele. She is full Puerto Rican, a heterosexual female and 53 years of age. My dad’s highest level of education is a bachelor's degree. He currently works as the head of the fraud department at Capital One. Future career goals, as stated by him, is to retire as soon as possible! He is fully Turkish, a heterosexual male, and 51 years of age. My boss’s highest level of education is a bachelor’s degree. He currently is my manager at a retail T-mobile location, with future goals of becoming a district manager. He is fully Italian, a heterosexual male, and 38 years of age. My best friend, Zac’s highest level of education is High School. He currently works with me at T-Mobile, works 2 overnight shifts at a hospital, as a helper, and just recently started attending HCC with the aspiration to become an E.M.T. He is white, a heterosexual male, and 22 years of age. - The demographic characteristics that I believe to be the most important to know, would be everybody's race/ethnicity, as I am one to believe that every race may hold certain values and beliefs regarding specific matters.
Assignment 1: Dishing out American Pie 2. Cut a pie into 10 slices. Lay out 5 plates in a row in order from the top 20% to the bottom 20%. Provide labels in front of each plate as the anchor did in this video. Use the following labels, wealthiest, upper middle class, middle class, lower middle class, poorest. Have an extra plate ready for people in your survey to determine the pieces of pie that the top 1% of the wealthiest group would have on their plate. Take a photo. You will submit this photo as part of your assignment. 3. Ask each person in your study (via zoom or facetime, if necessary) to “dole out as accurately as possible,” who gets how many pieces of the American pie? (If you are using zoom or facetime, you will have to dole out the pieces of pie for them.) Ask one person at a time without letting this person see the results of other participants. Write down/tally how many slices of pie each person put on each plate. Then, ask each person how many slices of pie do they think the top 1% wealthiest would have? Write down/tally each person’s response. Turn this information in to me as part of your assignment.
Assignment 1: Dishing out American Pie 4. Show them the actual number of slices each group would have based on what you learned in this video. Write down their verbal responses and visual expressions after learning this information. Share what you learned about their responses for this question. - The biggest take away that I have come across from their responses is that not everybody is aware of this 1% wealth class, including myself. This is scary due to the fact that everybody knows that there are wealthy people in the world. However, not everybody knows that those who are wealthier than the wealthiest, contain the majority of the country's wealth! After talking to the 4 individuals I selected, I found a common ground that we all agree that there can be a debate on the wealth tax of the wealthiest class, even though we believe there should be a wealth tax. However there is no debate that the top 1% should most definitely receive a wealth tax, these people can afford it without a blink of an eye.

Assignment 1: Dishing out American Pie 5. How would you assess the accuracy of peoples’ representations of the distribution of wealth in America? Did you note any differences in a person’s representation of the distribution of wealth given their social location (race, class, gender, etc.)? What did you learn about wealth inequality from this assignment? - The accuracy of my selected individual’s representations of the distribution of wealth in America were pretty, decently, accurate. All of the individuals I selected come from different backgrounds stemming from Puerto Rican, Turkish, Italian, and White. However, I did not notice a difference in a person’s representation of the distribution or wealth, based upon their social location. We all fall within the same wealth class, and I feel as though I can come to the conclusion that their difference in representation comes from the unawareness of how dangerous this wealth inequality truly is. The biggest thing that I learned about wealth inequality, from this assignment, is that wealth inequality is much worse than I initially imagined. I learned that the lower middle class, and the poorest class, hold virtually no percentage of America’s wealth, which is deeply saddening!
