Jamison Wilson FCSC3320: Family Policy November 25, 2023 Influencing The Future Of Family Policy Assignment Part 1 Medicaid is a Federal and State Program in the United States that helps with medical costs for some people who have limited resources of income. Medicaid is the largest source of funding for medical and health-related services for lower-income families. During Barack Obama’s presidency he wanted to improve the access of health insurance for United States citizens by introducing The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act formally known as Obama Care. Once Obama care went into effect certain states did not allow the medicaid expansion. North Carolina was one of those states. North Carolina being one of the states to not have the Medicaid expansion it has affected lower-income families in a tremendous way by creating a Medicaid coverage gap meaning only having a limited number of individuals to obtain health insurance coverage which places families of having to face worse health care access and health outcomes. Not being able to access preventive healthcare such as: annual physical exams and mammograms. Forcing these low income families to utilize emergency room departments for health care as opposed to having primary care providers This reduces the efficiency of emergency room departments by increasing the cost of healthcare and reducing their abilities to provide emergency treatment for which is their primary goal and purpose.
Now with the Medicaid expansion being implemented. North Carolina will now start to see a significant improvement in maternal and child health outcomes, access to care for young adults, reduced financial stress on the parents and health care providers of the young children. Having access to health insurance with the Medicaid expansion can improve the access to preventive care, reducing the health outcomes before, during, and after pregnancy and reducing the maternal rates.

Part 3: Letter November 25, 2023 Donny Lambeth U.S House of Representatives Washington D.C, 20515 Dear Representative Lambeth, I am writing to you as a Senior Behavioral and Social Sciences major regarding the house bill number 76 which discusses the access to healthcare options which responds to the Medicaid Expansion in North Carolina which is affecting lower-income families. As you know Medicaid is funded by the federal and state governments and Medicaid is the largest source of federal funding that particular states receive. I am writing to you to urge your support on fighting for North Carolina to have the opportunity to participate with the Medicaid expansion. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act formally known as Obama Care was first introduced on March 23, 2010 during Barack Obama’s presidency. Obama care is a law that was put into place to make it much easier for individuals who live in the current states that implement Obama Care to purchase health insurance that they would need. The Affordable Care Act mandates the health insurance companies are responsible and required to provide a certain amount of levels of coverage to each plan. This Care Act will fund the individuals who need
access to available Prescriptions, Doctors bills, Dental care, Vision care, Hospital bills, Nursing home care, Medicare premiums, and Personal care services like medical equipment and other home health services. For Example North Carolina among other states were not on the receiving end of the Medicaid expansion which resulted in less funding available for the other priorities such as: public education, workforce development, public safety, housing, transportation, and taxes will be cut. Also not being able to access preventive healthcare such as: annual physical exams and mammograms. Forcing these low income families to utilize emergency room departments for health care as opposed to having primary care providers This reduces the efficiency of emergency room departments by increasing the cost of healthcare and reducing their abilities to provide emergency treatment for which is their primary goal and purpose. Again I urge you for your support in introducing North Carolina as a state to have the Medicaid expansion for lower-income families which will be beneficial to all families who need it most. If you and your staff would love to have more information on this matter you can contact me. I look forward to hearing from you on our progress in the future. Sincerely, Jamison Wilson, North Carolina Central University
