SOC 112 Module Three Worksheet Statuses and Roles Status 1 Status 2 Status 3 1. Describe three statuses that you occupy in society. I am a mother. I am a wife. I am a student. 2. Identify whether each status is ascribed or achieved. This is an ascribed status. This is an ascribed status. This is an achieved status. 3. Explain what the role expectations are for each status. The expectation for this role is to nurture and care for my children. The expectation for this role is that I care for and support my husband. The expectation for this role is that I complete my work and maintain my grades. 4. Provide one example of role conflict. As a mom, I face conflict when I do not have enough time to care for my children due to obligations as a wife or school obligations. As a wife, I face role conflict when I do not have the time to care for and support my husband due to school obligations or obligations in being a mother. As a student, I face role conflict when I do not have enough time to complete my work due to family obligations. 5. Provide one example of role strain. I am strained by the expectation to give my children unending attention while maintaining my other roles. I am strained by the expectation of trying to show my husband adequate care and support while maintaining my other roles. I am strained by the expectation of being a student and maintaining a good GPA while maintaining my other roles. 6. Provide one example of a status that might be subject to social inequalities. For example, mothers tend to make less money in the workplace, an experience known as the motherhood penalty. As a mother attempting to return to work, I am facing lower pay than males. As a wife in a working role, I am still expected to tend to children and housework regardless of working a full- time job as well. Older generations returning to school are not treated the same.
