Writing Assignment 2 Chapter 2 Social Construction STEP ONE : Read the material listed under unit two. STEP TWO: Answer the following in full paragraphs. 1. Describe the authors discussion of the tomato and how it is socially constructed. What does she mean by the idea that a tomato is socially constructed. The authors discussion of the tomato was used to prove that the same thing can mean something different to everyone. The material states, “to the chef, its an ingredient …” , to the heckler, its used as a classic insult …” This is socially constructed as we all have access to the same things yet continuously use them for different purposes. That is the exact definition of a social construct, with it being an influential and shared interpretation of reality that will vary across time and space. 2. Choose five automobiles or trucks. List them and then list what socially constructed meaning is attached to each of these vehicles. What does this tell you about social construction. Mercedes Benz – this would be considered a hierarchy, which is an idea placed into a ranked relationship, a Benz is a higher end car than a Chevrolet. Tesla – this would be considered a binary, cars release fossil fuels that are bad for the environment and this car is supposed to be good for the environment Jeep- this can be considered an association- people who drive jeeps like to travel Camry- this can be a category, this brand of car also makes many other cars that all have similar traits. RAM – this would be considered a signifier, most people who drive trucks like the same kind of things and act the same way , STEP THREE : Watch the crash course video listed in unit 2 and then answer the questions. Write a full paragraph with at least two sentences for each concept.

The crash course video titled Cultures, subcultures, and Counter Cultures explains these 3 topics in a much more simplified way. This video defines culture as a way of distinguishing cultural patterns, in terms of your social class. Your personal background and family impacts your culture. Those who were brought up with more money and more loving family members are going to have a different culture than those who did not. Your culture can also be impacted by your social life. Even though everyone has a different culture it doesn’t mean one is higher or better than the other. The diversity of those you are around also impacts your culture as it introduces you to new experiences and drives personal growth. Just as there are cultures there are subcultures which are, cultural patterns that are set apart from the rest of society. The video used the example of hipsters, which were once a subculture but people are more accepting of these practices. Subcultures can be defined just as how others act differently than others. Subcultures have subgroups branched off of them leading to counter cultures which would be those who act in complete opposition to what is “ normal. ” Counter cultures would be groups such as LGBTQ+, members of these groups are working to change social standards. They want to make people more aware and open to cultures other than their own.
