Stress on the Body Asia Strength SOCI331: Research Methods for Sociology Dr. Lupo 7 January 2024
Step 1 I have chosen to study the topic “How Does Stress Affect the Body” for various reasons, some being personal and some just being because the topic is very interesting. Personally, I have experienced hardship on my body due to stress. Firstly, I had such a severe migraine that I temporarily lost vision due to being over stressed. Additionally, I suffered a miscarriage because of the emotional challenges I had been facing. Stress has a profound influence on physical health. Understanding the extreme impact of stress on the body is vital in today’s demanding society. Stress can have a physiological impact on an individual and understanding it can help us understand the physiological and psychological mechanisms through which stress impacts physical and mental health. Step 2 I have decided that I will conduct a research project using both quantitative and qualitative methods to achieve proper data collection. Combining the two will allow me to gain a comprehensive understanding of this topic. Quantitative research provides numerical and statistical data to identify trends and patterns of stress. Qualitative method gathers detailed information and has a more in-depth answer for the study at hand. Using both methods will provide a deeper understanding of how stress affects the body and could possibly enhance the credibility and significance of my results. Since I will be using both methods of approach, the questions formed will be a mixture of both closed and open-minded questions to provide a better detail of the topic.
Lastly, I would conduct the survey through personal interviews. I think this will allow me to collect as much data as I can, especially if I am able to obtain a certain target. It will give me direct interaction between myself and the interviewee to interpret their thoughts, emotions and experiences. It will offer the flexibility to explore unanticipated topics. For example, I may put together a set of questions that I will answer to each participant, but their answers to the questions may vary and open up related topics to my own. I will also be able to determine which questions are inappropriate or make the interviewee uncomfortable by body language, gestures and facial expressions. Disadvantages include the following: they are time-consuming, frustrating and can become unorganized if not reasonably prepared. If I am interviewing a large group, I would more than likely spend a massive amount of time trying to interview them compared to actually studying the information gathered. Another disadvantage is that I may not be composed enough to maintain a straight face, or my body language may affect the interviewee’s answer, or they may just not be comfortable with me. Step 3: My research question is, “How Does Stress Affect the Body?” An independent variable is a factor that is intentionally manipulated or changed by the researcher. An independent variable remains the same and has an effect on the dependent variable. It is the subject that is being studied or research. On the other hand, a dependent variable is the variable that is influenced by the independent variable. It is the effect or the outcome that is being studied. In my research question, “How does stress affect the body?” The independent variable is stress

since it can manipulate the entire study while the dependent variable will be the various bodily responses and changes that occur as a result of stress. Step 4 Stress is a common experience that affects individuals in different ways. My hypothesis suggests that chronic or prolonged stress can have wide-ranging impacts on physical and mental health. Stress has been linked to weakening immune systems from fatigue, development of mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, and can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain which affect the mood and behaviors of people. Step 5 Research Question 1: How do you know when you are stressed and in need of a break? Research Question 2: Have you ever had a migraine, and do you know the cause of it? Research Question 3: How often do you feel stressed from your job? Research Question 4: Do you believe stress can impact you physically and mentally? Research Question 5: When stressed, what part of your body (physically) have you experienced some change? Research Question 6: When stressed, how do you feel mentally? Research Question 7: Have you experienced fatigue after a long draining day? Research Question 8: Have you experienced anxiety or depression due to stress? Research Question 9: What are activities you do within your day to mitigate stress?
Research Question 10: Who do you often go to when you are stressed? Step 6 I believe that my survey would be valid and reliable because I will be able to explore true and transparent information from participating subjects. It will allow me to understand the different perspectives while still obtaining several trends and patterns. I think participants will likely give the same answers as a whole if they were to take the survey twice because the survey gives the participants room for thought. It won’t be quick nor will it be like the test we took recently on the keyboard.
