I chose the 1992 Disney movie Aladdin, produced by Ron Clements, and John Musker. (Clements, Ron, and John Musker. 1992. Aladdin). As I have researched the controversies and diverse perspectives within this movie, I have come to realize that the magical film I once enjoyed as a child has more to it than I realized. Some of those diverse perspectives are gender, race, sexism, and unrealistic expectations for boys and girls. As you watch this film you notice that Jasmine and other female characters are dressed in provocative clothes consisting of crop tops and low-rise pants. The character Jasmine is supposed to be no older than fifteen. It is outrageous how in some scenes she uses her sexuality to manipulate people to get what she wants. Disney is sending a message to its young viewers that they can get what they want from a man by using their body and showing boys that they can use girls for their body. ( Walwyn, 2016) . My self-concept influences my perspective of the work because I am a very open-minded person and comfortable within my skin, but I struggle to separate cultures and traditions from one another. So, that influences my perspective of the works at hand. I don’t always see things that could be offense to others as offensive. My personal beliefs may also influence my perspective as I do not agree with arranged marriages. I strongly believe that men should not be the only ones playing as power characters because women are just as capable. My self-identity I grew up in an environment where men were superior to women. Some are offended by this being represented within the movie as all the characters in a power position are male. The way in which I grew up became a part of my identity therefore what is normal to me is not normal to some and their perspective may be different on that matter. Older generations may find the movie to be more acceptable than the newer generations. As the movie is more focused on older traditions. Such as a man marrying a woman, the father having to arrange the marriage for his daughter, the use of male power to control the outcome of situations. These traditions have become offensive to this generation as gender roles are becoming offensive. Different cultures may perceive the creative works differently as many cultures share the traditions of arranged marriages and male superiority. However, some cultures may perceive the movie as inappropriate as the princess in the movie is showing her body as her outfit is less modest than other cultures believe woman should dress such as the Islamic culture.
