1 Media and Democratic Citizenship: An Analysis of The Social Dilemma Sadie S. Loeffler The Ohio State University COMM 2850: Media & Citizenship Dr. Joe Francemone January 28th, 2024
2 Media and Democratic Citizenship: An Analysis of The Social Dilemma In the documentary “The Social Dilemma” we see the effects that social media has on us as a society and the world we live in. We hear about different ideas from many different sides all from major technology industry insiders including ethicists and social scientists. Throughout the documentary they explain how algorithms are used to show manipulative content and how the content is distributed to the users. The content that is being distributed to a major contributor that affects our society in different ways such as censorship, polarization, and addiction. This documentary helps highlight some of the similarities that formed between the media and democratic citizenship, due to digital media platforms. The documentary also highlights how social media has a huge part in molding society and influencing political decisions and opinions. Which leads me to think about different steps that we as a society can take to make informed decisions. The manipulation of content and information that is being pushed by algorithms in order to keep users engaged is a recurring theme throughout the film. Algorithms play a significant part in forming echo chambers by continuing to push the same content at an individual. As more and more people are using social media and becoming influenced by it, the documentary highlights the downfall of critical thinking, lessening attention spans, and the start of making uninformed decisions in a democratic society (Estelle, 2022, Jan 4). The documentary also brings up the topic of users' attention is comical and explores the ethical impact and implications of capitalism. The effects that the media has on mental health, the type of news they consume, and the sharing of personal information and data each have there own problems when it comes to the principles of democratic citizenship. These questions should
3 make the audience hopefully consider the impact that the media has on society and will hopefully act as a wake-up call (Smith, 2017, Sept.27). The concepts that are highlighted in “The Social Dilemma” were concepts that were discussed during the lectures, specifically topics that surround the topic that the influence of the media is helping shape public opinion. During lecture 1.3, the concept of Americans feeling underrepresented in society was brought up. This leads most of them to feel they should participate less in American society (YouTube, 2023, July 28). The documentary only helps to reinforce that the media plays a ginormous role in the way people act and behave as a society. “The Social Dilemma” has made me think about my own habits when it comes to online media and especially social media when it comes to the impact that it has on my own views. It has reminded me to take a deeper look into the content that I am being shown and the content that the algorithms are showing to me based on my interactions with different “posts” and the possibility of narrowing diverse content. It also has made me think about my parents' digital consumption. My mom is not on any social media so does this limit her exposure to different stories around the world. This is an example of how some Americans might not be on social media or might not have access to it, and the limiting media that they are consuming.
