John Scott Hannon Act Transitional Support Increased access to mental health support and suicide Prevention Strengthen Veterans’ Affairs as a whole Oversight of Mental Health and Suicide prevention services Investing more time and effort into studying and understanding contemporary and alternative treatment options for mental health
Veteran Suicide Facts “Less than 50% of veterans receive mental health support of any kind. One cause of this is mental health services for veterans being severely underfunded and understaffed ”, (Hooper, C. R. (2021, November 21). Why Veterans Are Reluctant to Get Mental Help . Once A Soldier. https://www.onceasoldier.org/why-veterans-are-reluctant-to-get-mental- help/).

Veteran Suicide Facts In 2020, 6,146 veterans died by suicide. Suicide was the 13 th leading cause of death among veterans overall, and the second leading cause of death among veterans under age 45. Additionally, in 2019, 1.6% of veteran young adults ages 18-25 reported making a suicide attempt during the previous 12 months. This was an increase from 0.9% in 2009 ”, (2023, May 9). Transitional Assistance Transition Assistance Program (TAP) offered by the Veterans’ Affairs and Department of Labor is the whole program but is broken down into smaller options. U.S Department Of Labor. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/vets/programs/tap) Department of Labor Employment Workshop (DOLEW) that consists of a “2- or 3-day program that teaches veterans how to create a resume, network and to look for employment” , (2023). Transition Assistance Program . U.S Department Of Labor. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/vets/programs/tap
Transitional Assistance Continued.. Wounded Warrior and Caregiver Employment Workshop (WWEW) which assists in finding employment for veterans and/or their caregivers with life altering injuries sustained in the line of duty. Career and Credential Exploration (C2E) allows for further education via apprenticeship, certifications or becoming licensed in a trade. US Department of Veterans Affairs (2021, November 21). Constraints of Policy Time and place online classes are being conducted Discharging veterans to VA employee ratio Social stigma of asking for mental health help Not enough mental health resources available Veterans not knowing what resources are available to them
Effectiveness of Policy According to the VA, “the 2022 Annual Suicide Report showed there was a decrease of suicides by 343 veterans”, (Miller, 2022). In 2020, there were 6,146 Veteran suicides. This was on average 16.8 per day. In 2020, there were 343 fewer Veteran suicides than in 2019, and the number of Veteran suicides was lower than each prior year since 2006. (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2021).
Recommendations Ensuring veterans are on home soil before beginning transition modules Looking at the VA employee to veteran ratio, looking at the high turn over rates and reasoning behind the rates Creating more awareness to available options and access to resources
