STUDENT STRESS AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS Situated Position Assignment: The Relationship Between Student Stress and Academic Success Sharon Szczerba Arrua AP/ SOSC 2000 York University October 31, 2023
SITUATED POSITION ASSIGNMENT 2 Situated Position Assignment: The Relationship Between Student Stress and Academic Success Understanding the correlation between student stress and their academic success is essential in today’s fast-paced and demanding academic scene. Stress and the strive for success are two interconnected factors that play a significant role in the life of most students. The goal of this paper is to examine the relationship between student stress and their academic success while exploring the impact of stress levels on cognitive abilities, emotional strain, and overall performance. In addition, I will briefly discuss how the university environment contributes to the students’ mental health. To provide in depth and valid arguments I will be using examples from social media, academic papers, and my own personal relevant experiences. According to the CalMHSA Student Mental Health Campus-Wide Survey 2013 summary report, most lifetime mental disorders first appear/form by the age of 24 and untreated mental illness during college years could result in a developmentally challenging transition to adulthood. (Sontag-Padilla et al., 2013) The most common mental health problems in students are anxiety, depression, attention deficits, as well as mood and behaviors disorders. These mental health issues are often dismissed by students because they believe it is just stress, which then leads to longer lasting and more serious effects on their personal well-being and academic success. The relationship between student stress and their academic success can vary. While some level of stress can motivate students and improve their performance, excessive or chronic stress has also been proven to negatively impact students’ mental health (Li and Lin, 2003; Eisenberg et al., 2009; Green et al., 2021). This is to say that the pressure, and kick for a student’s survival instincts to begin, can very well lead to positive effects on the students’ lives but many students will instead, face the negative effects. There are those who excel under competitive, strict, and demanding conditions. I for one am one of those students who enjoy the demanding aspects of university and the career I am aiming for. I have been competing in sports, marksmanship, and
SITUATED POSITION ASSIGNMENT 3 have been part of the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force), which are all high pressure and demanding opportunities. However, in this past year I have noticed the decline in motivation, energy, and passion within the groups of people around me and myself all due to mental health problems they aren’t even aware of. It is less difficult to identify signs of these mental health issues on other people than it is to on yourself. I believe that research would simply prove that this is an effect of the disconnect we currently have within ourselves and the world around us due to the solitude that comes with academic success. A side effect of chronic stress is a reduced sense of self efficacy which I believe could greatly impact the developmental process of students seeing as they are in their most developmentally important years for adulthood. High levels of stress can lead to decreased concentration, impaired memory, and difficulty in time management and assignment completion, all of which can obstruct academic performance. While researching this topic through social media, I noticed that society tends to set certain expectations for students. The additional stress of these expectations set by society can impact student’s mental health and overall well-being, further affecting their ability to succeed academically. I believe it is important for students to find a healthy coping mechanism and know where and how to seek support when dealing with stress to maintain a balance between academic demands and their well-being. According to experts from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), “academic stress can reduce motivation, hinder academic achievement, and lead to increased college dropout rates (Pascoe et al., 2020). Chronic stress can also result in physical symptoms, including headaches, stomachaches, and sleep disturbances, which can further negatively affect a student’s academic performance (Deng et al., 2022), on the other hand, certain levels of stress can increase motivation and determination. The research conducted was in support of students and against the increased academic demands, however, I acknowledge that there is a population of people that disagree with my position.

SITUATED POSITION ASSIGNMENT 4 As a student with no financial aid and the responsibility to invest in my own education I encounter certain levels of anxiety due to financial stress. I work two jobs and attend school full- time and often I find having a social life unrealistic. The program, academic demands, financial and academic responsibilities as well as my personal need to be socially and culturally aware are all contributing factors to my stress. York University’s mental health strategy was developed using a holistic systems approach (York University Academic Plan 2015-2020). A holistic systems approach provides support that looks at the whole person not just mental health but also social and spiritual well-being (Holistic health- WCSU). Although York University offers many programs to help students in their mental health needs, further research would reveal actions such as increasing food and essential items’ prices around campus on top of unaffordable textbook and tuition costs, only further affect students negatively and lead to larger drop out and homelessness rates. In one of our tutorials, we had discussed how students tend to dismiss personal care and well-being during exam season. We will often put ourselves through so much strain without realizing that there is help. Often people fail to realize that students are entering a whole new world where they feel vulnerable due to all things considered. They are in an uncomfortable position where society tends to expect our future generation of doctors, lawyers, architects, and engineers to just jump into responsibility and adulthood without allowing for a smoother transition to occur. These expectations are part of what I believe to be the relationship between student stress and their academic success. I strongly believe that there are many ways in which universities can improve to ameliorate students’ personal well-being and academic success. I know that this is a topic worth researching because of the amount of information readily accessible. Students are our future and caring for their mental health is crucial for society. Research can be objective because its purpose is to collect and observe information without bias. I believe that I can research this
SITUATED POSITION ASSIGNMENT 5 topic without bias because I have been on both sides of the spectrum where this affects me and where it does not.
