1 Can Early Intervention and Therapy Help Reduce Symptoms of Postpartum Depression? Briana Nelsen School of Public Service and Education, Capella University SWK5001: Research in Social Work Practice Adam Quinn December 21, 2022
2 Research Question Can Early Intervention and Therapy Reduce Symptoms of Postpartum Depression? 1. Could presenting the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) at every obstetric appointment during pregnancy help catch symptoms earlier thus starting treatment earlier? 2. Are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) the most beneficial therapies to women that have been diagnosed with postpartum depression? Participants Pregnant women that range from 13 weeks to full term; women who have delivered their baby up until 12 months postpartum and clinicians such as midwives, nurses, social workers and obstetricians. Data Quantitative data that has been obtained through the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), multiple choice questionnaire that is concentrated around feelings of support, education about postpartum depression as well as severity of symptoms. Referencing previous studies done and the results that researchers found in order to create improved questionnaires as well as reviewing literature reviews and the references used. Data Collection EDPS results and questionnaire results throughout pregnancy (during every prenatal visit with obstetrician), postpartum appointment at 6 weeks for the mother and baby wellness checks at 1
3 week old, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months old. While also using the Becks Inventory Depression questionnaire to rate the severity of depression symptoms. Data Interpretation The most used data tool is computer software to which one can input data into the system and it will interpret data. “Complex statistical computations are performed flawlessly when electronic methods are used for data analysis, assuming that the data have been entered accurately and the appropriate method of statistical analysis has been selected”, (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers, 2017) . As well as paying close attention to the information putting inputted to ensure accuracy. Audience and Medium The intended audience in which I would present my findings to would be childbearing women, clinicians such as obstetricians or midwives, pediatricians, pediatric nurses and social workers in the pediatric field. More targeting those who work directly with women who are in family planning or have had their children as the more informed healthcare professionals are, the better equipped they are at seeing signs and intervening early. Other audience opportunities could also be at professional conferences or other events that were specifically designed for the obstetrics and pediatric fields, (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers, 2017) . A PowerPoint would be the best way in which to conduct my research proposal as it would put a visual spin on the points I’m attempting to get across. Also providing hand out examples of possible questions that could be in the questionnaire provided to the participants as well as the

Organizing the information in unison with my research proposal such as research question and sub questions, possible participants and control group that have given informed consent, data collection and the intended tools that are going to be used (questionnaires and surveys), how the data is going to be interpreted, final results from that data collection and finally the answer to my research question at the end in whether or not the research proves my overall hypothesis.
