Sanni 1 Gender Roles Sexual harassment in the workplace is influenced by gender in this article. Considering that men and women inhabit varying positions in the gender status hierarchy, their speculations on existing patterns of gendered interaction should differ. Women on low wages, however, may experience higher levels of sexual harassment at work due to unwanted sexual advances from men. Therefore, sexual favor requests, including additional verbal or physical conducts which result in sexual harassment are defined as such. As a result, women are often forced to submit to such conduct, whether explicitly or implicitly, because of their job nature. In the meantime, sexual harassment policy training can trigger gender stereotypes, so sexual harassment may occur between people of opposite and same sex, since a person's behavior can exert an effect over another. For instance, a man may not deem staring as sexual harassment, but a woman may, due to their perceived higher status than women, they thereby, are more likely to suffer from slurs and gendered physical harassment than women. In my experience as a barman in Africa, I worked with various waitresses who were willing to let customers touch their body parts in exchange for tips or patronage. It is difficult for women in Africa to distinguish between sexual harassment and admiration because of the low self-esteem stereotypes they are subjected to, particularly in rural areas. Although, due to the playful way these men carried out their actions, I was initially unsure whether these actions constituted sexual harassment until it became clear to me that all workers at the company are given the orientation "customers are always right" while they are considering taking the job, which made it difficult for me to define/detect sexual harassment. Due to the violation, contravention, defiance, and infringement of women's rights in Africa, sexual harassment cases are either overlooked or forgotten, therefore it is advised to share this article/paper with the class in the future.
