Major Research Project: Proposal Title of the essay Neoliberal Globalization and the Progression of Gender Equality in Asia Brief Description of the Topic Themelis (2020) defines neoliberal globalization as a phenomenon characterized by the progressive integration of economies, resulting in increased levels of international commerce, investment, and exchanging information and ideas across national boundaries. The phenomenon in question has had a significant impact on a global scale, especially in terms of advancing gender equality. In the Asian context, the phenomenon of neoliberal globalization has produced a variety of positive and negative effects on women. On the one hand, neoliberal globalization has expanded educational and career opportunities for women (Majumdar, 2018). This phenomenon is attributable, at least in part, to the increased literacy rates among women and their acquisition of the necessary skills to participate effectively in the global economy. In addition, neoliberal globalization has resulted in a significant transformation of the labor market, marked by an increase in the number of women in professional and managerial positions. In contrast, neoliberal globalization has also increased the exploitation of female workers (Majumdar, 2018). This phenomenon occurs because women are frequently employed in low-paying, unregulated economic sectors, exposing them to maltreatment and exploitation. In addition, neoliberal globalization has exacerbated the problem of women and girls being trafficked for sexual exploitation. The influence of neoliberal globalization on gender equality in Asia is complex and multifaceted (Batra & Reio, 2016). Positive and negative developments have been, and the total
impact varies across countries. The ongoing investigation and monitoring of the ramifications of neoliberal globalization on gender parity are crucial for identifying and overcoming the obstacles women face. It is crucial to recognize that the impact of neoliberal globalization on gender equality does not always follow a linear trajectory. In some instances, the advantages may outweigh the disadvantages, and vice versa. The consideration of the effects of neoliberal globalization on different groups of women is of equal importance, as the effects vary depending on socioeconomic status, social hierarchy, cultural heritage, and geographical context. Research Question To what extent has neoliberal globalization influenced the progression of gender equality in Asia? Hypothesis: Tentative Thesis This essay aims to provide the argument that the promotion of free market capitalism, under the framework of neoliberalism, has impeded the progress of gender equality for women in Asia. This essay aims to analyze two primary instances in South Korea and India, whereby women in the labor force and middle class have encountered persistent discrimination as a result of gender inequality.
