Marc Christian Ward BIBL 104-B44 LUO Doctor Andrew Moroz 5 July 2021 Discussion Board 7 3 Key Ideas from the Chapter 13 “Building for the Future” in Courageous Faith “If we make the wrong decision when we are young, we tend to set our lives on the wrong course. Once you are moving in the wrong direction, it is difficult to reverse yourself and turn around” (Hindson, 2003, p. 194). I started my younger years with a very rebellious mindset that damage relationships that I had with friends and family. At the time, I did not care about those relationships and did not have a plan for the future. I was so wrapped up with selfish instant gratification, that I never thought about the future for anyone but myself. After God came into my life, I was able to course correct my life decisions and turn in the right direction. Unfortunately, I wasted a lot of years with my family because of the poor decisions I had made. My regret is that my selfishness and foolishness wasted the precious time I could have spent with the people that cared about me. Fortunately, my relationship with my family has been mended and now I have a legacy that I must build for my own wife and son. Fortunately, this time God is at the helm and navigating me through the next chapters of my life. “The sooner you get focused on where you are going, the better off you will be in the long run” (Hindson, 2003, p. 194). This is absolutely a true and accurate statement. My course correction came when I had reached a dark pit in my life. I needed something serious in my life to get me steered in the right direction. God led me to the military and service in the United States Navy. The structure and discipline of military service coupled with my faith in Jesus, was exactly what I needed to figure out where I am going. I only regret that I did not have this focus sooner, but maybe that was not Gods plan for me at the time. Or I was too self-centered, foolish, and blind to see his path for me. “Every time God uses us to touch someone else, we are reaping dividends that have eternal significance. We are building a legacy of faith that can be transmitted from one generation to another (Hindson, 2003, p. 195). I am currently a Naval instructor that teaches aviation electronics courses to new members of Naval Aviation. A lot of the students under my tutelage are fresh out of high school and this is their first experience outside of home life. Although I cannot minister to these students directly, I can show them God through my actions, obedience, and character. I would like to think that in some way I have touched the lives of these students and passed on a next generation of faith. 2 Thinks Learned from the Biblical Character Nehemiah
“Nehemiah had seen a vision of a better future for Jerusalem. He realized that the city had no future without walls” (Hindson, 2003, p. 198). Nehemiah understood how to assess a situation and come up with a solid working plan. A lot of people these days will complain about a situation but will have no plan to fix discrepancies. A vision to fix an issue has 5 key components. First, we need to have a realistic view of the current situation. This view must be unbiased and unselfishly motivated. Secondly, there must be an optimistic view or outcome of the situation. If the leader is in doubt or pessimistic, how do you expect anyone to follow a plan. Thirdly, you must know the available resources for any task to succeed. Its great to have big ideas for change, but if you lack resources, that change can fall short mid-way through. Fourthly, attitude is a key component to success. Not many people enjoy change but having a positive attitude can convince others to join the cause and hinders skepticism. Lastly, having a specific plan in place, will outline exactly how to reach a goal. Without a plan of action, the vision can become distorted and ultimately fail. “Nehemiah’s leadership reflects the basic qualities of all great leaders” (Hindson, 2003, p. 199). There are seven basic elements of leadership that Nehemiah possessed. These qualities can be found in all great leaders. The qualities are commitment, motivation, teamwork, decision, goals, accomplishments, and celebration. Great leaders must be committed to their visions and have unwavering motivation even when times get tough. Leaders must make risk decisions and work as a team to accomplish tasks. Without clear and concise goals, the teams and decisions will not be fruitful. Lastly, even small victories are considered accomplishments and should be celebrated with giving thanks and glory to God. 1 Way to use what I have Learned I am currently in a leadership position in the United States Navy. After reading Nehemiah’s story, I can tell that my leadership qualities are in line with what God would have me do. I try to lead my sailors in the same way as Nehemiah in that I strive to have a realistic, optimistic, and honest view of the task that are given to me in Naval Aviation. I do my best to keep a positive attitude and set specific plans of actions when tasks occur. My focus is on my team and making sure we have a compact cohesive unit. I make risk decisions at the right level and celebrate the victories of my troops. Above all, I thank God for the accomplishments and safety of my troops. I will continue to strive to have the leadership qualities as Nehemiah and thank God for the opportunity to lead my sailors. References Ed Hindson (2017). (p. 194-199).
