Importance of knowing the Bible
Do you believe it is essential to know what is in the Bible? Why or why not? What difference would it make in your life? Yes, knowing what is in the Bible is essential because, being a follower of Christ, I read it regularly and consistently. I will receive many benefits, such as knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and discernment. According to Bickel & Jantz, “The Bible is God’s revelation of himself to people” (Bickel & Jantz, 2003). I concur that the Bible shows me God’s character and provides God’s revelation of himself to me. In every section of the Bible, I see God’s Holy, unchanging, faithful, gracious, and loving character. The difference in my life is that if I didn’t know what was in the Bible, I would be another lost soul; I would not
be able to maintain a sense of self-worth and self-confidence. In other words, I would be a mess.
In your observation or experience, what do you perceive to be the current level of biblical literacy in America? On what do you base your conclusion? I understand that biblical illiteracy is one of the big problems that the church is facing today, and it affects not only
the church but also the families and our nation. In my observation, I look at my close family members. There are seven of us, and I am the only one who knows about or reads the Bible. Our parents brought us up in church, but everyone else just forgot about what we were taught as children and acted as if they were not raised in church; they allowed life to change their minds and hearts, and they don’t read the bible. My conclusion is that we, as Christians, have more work to do, and based on that, God’s Word in Hoses 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed from a lack of knowledge” (
Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011). The knowledge of God is the spark, the inciting incident that can bring us an understanding of His ways. His ways will point us to Jesus Christ the Way. Those who love Him will obey. They will grow in biblical knowledge each day. What is the impact of knowing or not knowing what is in the Bible on yourself, your family, our culture, and our country? For me, the effect of understanding the Bible is that it influences my daily life, my self-worth, and my relationships, and if I didn’t know the Bible, I could not be faithful to Him because it teaches me how to be loyal to him. I firmly believe that family is at the center of God’s plan for the happiness and progress of His Children. When the families pray together and study God’s Word, the relationship can only become stronger through Jesus Christ. Because of Him, the joy and love of families can last beyond death. As for our
culture knowing the Bible, I would say the more we read, the more we are exposed to how to handle life issues through God’s Word, and I would say the same about our country. If politicians would reference the bible about world issues, we would be in a better place on world issues where our government is concerned.
