1 New Testament Reflection Paper Kathryn Boone Colorado Christian University BIB-102A- New Testament Intro Dr.Ihm 2/25/2024
2 The word “canon” was derived from the Greek word Kanon meaning a measuring stick, as the word evolved it became to mean a standard or specific set of rules the church used to determine which scriptures and books would make it into educating the church. In our reading from Gundry this week he states that, “As applied to the New Testament, canon refers to those books accepted by the church as the standard that governs Christian belief and conduct" (Gundry, 2012). From my Introduction to Old Testament class, I already somewhat knew what the Canon was in reference to the Bible as a whole. After our reading this week I now understand better how it affected the New Testament in general. Thinking about my understanding of the readings of the canon, I can relate it to a standard of historical accuracy. Although many of the scriptures were received through word of mouth and then written into scriptures, I think the books in the New Testament were chosen and depicted as accurately as possible. I find it captivating how some of the books are written as a set while others stand alone and are set in no order. Regardless, the scriptures tell us that God guided these hands that translated his words onto paper to form the Holy Bible. The information presented in Grundy (2012) helps me to separate my self-created visions of how scripture in the New Testament came to be from the reality of when it came to fruition and the amount of time and discernment that took place concerning the culmination of what is today referred to as the Gospel. I suppose because the Bible is a complete work that has been translated and written with slight differences depending on the version one chooses to read, I naively/unintentionally assumed that the scriptures included were the only scriptures received. This perception stemmed from not fulling understanding major efforts of the picking and choosing of the scriptures and books that made the cut per say.
3 After our reading this week, I am not so much left with any questions per say more of an awestruck and feeling of admiration. I now understand and realize just how much sacrifice went into the making of the word of God. Knowing these stories in God`s word have stood the test of time and stood up to the scrutiny of others, makes the scriptures a little deeper and hold more accountability in my opinion.
