Sermon Notes Baptism: Pastor claims that baptism doesn't save, yet 1 Peter 3:20-21 says "[20]  who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. [21] Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" Bible Alone: Bible Alone is a pretty large assumption to make, and is not itself attested to in Sacred Scripture. On the contrary, as Paul says in Thessalonians: "[15]  So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. " This seems to state that church teachings need to be followed whether found directly in the Bible or not. Furthermore, even if doctrine could only be based directly upon Scripture it still doesn't follow that our beliefs should be based upon our own interpretation of Scripture. 2 Peter 1:20-21 RSVCI: "[20] First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, [21] because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." The Sacraments: When speaking on the Sacraments David Platt misrepresents what the church teaches about them. Platt states that we are saved through Grace alone (which is entirely true and has always been the teaching of the Catholic Church) through faith alone(which is found nowhere in Scripture "James 2:24 RSVCI [24] You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone."). Where Platt misrepresents the churches position is he claims that the Sacraments (specific Baptism, Confession, and Eucharist) couldn't have anything to do with salvation because they're "works". This assumes that God doesn't give his grace through the Sacraments. What else could Jesus be talking about when he said: "John 3:5 RSVCI [5]  Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." Confession: Platt states that we should only confess our sins directly to Jesus. If this were the case, why would Jesus give the apostles the authority to forgive sins? "John 20:22-23 RSVCI [22]  And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. [23]  If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”"
