Harrison Coelho Gospel of John Prof. Brown Interpretive Bible Study of John 12:1-11 1. Do a careful reading of the text, list below and identify any the following observations you make: (Repetitious words, contrasts, comparisons, lists, cause and effect relationships, figures of speech, important conjunctions, key verbs, religious or theological theme words.) Lazarus Mary and Martha are serving Lazarus, Jesus, and the people there for the dinner. The Passover feast which is still celebrated today. Betray, Serve, Raised 2. List any important words or concepts (theological or cultural) that might need further research. Then use a commentary or Bible dictionary to provide definitions and answers. Passover is a word that I needed to further research. The definition of Passover is the major Jewish spring festival which commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery, lasting seven or eight days from the 15th day of Nisan.
3. Now look for larger details. Circle any of the following that are worthy of note: General to Specific Movement Questions and Answers Dialogue Purpose/Results Means Conditional Clauses Actions/Roles Emotional Terms Significant Connections Story Shifts 4. How does this passage relate to the original audience of John’s gospel and the Purpose John had in writing this gospel? The purpose of John was to introduce Jesus into the world, otherwise known as the Jewish and the Gentile. This passage relates to the original audience because Jesus was Jewish, and that Jesus came for everyone and not just Jewish people. 5. How does this passage relate to the literary context? What significance might the preceding stories have in interpreting this passage? The significance of the story of Lazarus’s death is because without the death of Lazarus John 12 could not have been written. Also, it showcased that Jesus was able to foreshadow his death and resurrection with his statement in John 11 directed towards Martha. 5 Basic Steps
1. Try to summarize what John is telling the original audience about Jesus with 2 or 3 sentences (Incorporate insight from O’Day and Hylen and the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible): John is explaining the interaction between Jesus, his disciples/followers, and Lazarus. The main think that John is telling the original audience is that with God even the miracle of resurrection is possible, so in short with God and Jesus in your heart nothing is impossible. 2. What are the relevant differences between the original audience and 21 st century recipients of John’s gospel? One important difference is for the original audience compared to 21 st century is that for the original audience it was meant to talk about Lazarus’s death and Jesus’s miracle of resurrecting him, but for the 21 st century it is to show that through the power of Christ and God nothing is impossible, even resurrection. 3. List two or three theological principles found in this text that “cross the principlizing bridge.” In other words, they would be true for all people, all places, and all times. One of the theological principles I found that is true for all people, all places and all times is when Jesus says, “…You will always have the poor among you, but you will not

always have me.” This is true at all times because even today we have many poor people in the world. Another principle is when it says that Judas would later betray Jesus and that is true because even in today’s world people betray one another all the time. Loyalty is hard to find. 4. Consult the Biblical Map. What are some parallel scriptures from other places in John’s Gospel or elsewhere in the New Testament that reinforce or add insight to this passage? Explain. 5. Make application of the principles. How does the modern reader “put into practice” the principles you discovered in everyday life? The modern-day reader can put into practice the principles I’ve discovered is creating and nurturing a great relationship with God by praying, going to church, opening your heart to him and nothing is impossible. You can achieve anything through Christ as your savior.
