Original Sin
A Wesleyan View
For Wesley, “Original Sin was essential to the theological grammar of Scripture and life”.

To understand the meaning and consequences of original sin, Scripture must be researched and our thoughts and understanding of original sin must be backed by Scripture. His view on Original Sin can be described as: he believed man was created in the Image of God, and that it was through man’s own free choice that he chose the lies of Satan over the holy and perfect union he had with God. Since, Adam made the choice to disobey God, he brought sin upon every race and every man. He believed that sin is passed down from generation to generation and without God’s
grace, we will all be in dire conditions and condemned to death without redemption. Humans, while created in Imago Dei
, they are responsible for their own disobedience and obedience, their own action, and their free will to choose. He believed that regarding Original Sin, Scripture always has the final authority. It was because of the Original Sin that God put into place, His redemption story. It was through the Son separating from His Father, that He came to earth to right the relationship that was broken long ago in the Garden of Eden. Romans 5:18-19 (NLT) reads: “Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.
Because one-person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.” The Fall of man-“this act of disobedience (the eating of the forbidden fruit), the first act of human sin—the original sin—
brought about the fall: tragic physical, social, and spiritual consequences for the entire human race”

didn’t stop our designed relationship with the Creator. The strength of Wesley’s view is that he can point to Scripture to see how the effects of Adam’s sin has been passed down. He explains the sin that covered the Earth before and during the time of Noah (Genesis 6:5), how sin continued throughout the Old Testament, and he talked about the sinful ways of the Romans. He also cited many verses and passages from Romans and James to confirm his views on Original Sin. He realized that it is only through grace that we are saved from Sin. I agree with the Wesleyan view of Original Sin. My sin life was inherited by Adam, however because of the work of the Holy Spirit, it is through God’s grace that I have been sanctified. It doesn’t mean sin goes away once sanctification has taken place because I still fall to human nature. It means, as in Romans 5:20-21, that God’s grace is abundant, “God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.
So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting 1 Joel B. Green, “A Wesleyan View,”

in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Because Jesus lives and breathes in me, I have been delivered from the dead life that happened when Original Sin took place.
