Introduced to the Four Gospels
*” Why four Gospels?” Why do we need four accounts of the life of Jesus? Would it
have been enough to just have one or maybe two?
The Four Gospels were written by individuals inspired by God to share the story of Jesus and guide readers towards becoming His disciple. Each Gospel was written with a specific audience in mind, and the authors carefully selected the events they included. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the primary sources for understanding Jesus' life and building the foundation of His church. This truth was first revealed to Peter in Matthew 16:18 and later extended to the apostles in Ephesians 2:20. The apostles played a critical role in receiving the gospel directly from Jesus and passing it on to the church through their teachings and writings, establishing the groundwork for the early Christian communities. Jesus's teachings are found in the Four Gospels and other sources. Each of the Gospels provides us with valuable insights into the life of Jesus. However, many other Gospels were circulating during the first century, but not all of them were reliable as there were various religious groups at that time. Matthew, a tax collector, wrote for the former Jews, while Luke, a physician, noted mainly for the Gentiles. Mark focused on the Commoners, who make up most of humanity. John, a Greek philosopher, wrote for the Hellenized Jews. Despite other sources, the Four Gospels remain the primary source for information on Jesus's life, with extrabiblical sources also confirming his historicity.
No, the prevalence of skepticism in the Greco-Roman world was widespread. Even among the disciples, doubt had to be overcome, as was the case with Thomas, who initially disbelieved the report of Jesus' resurrection. The Four Gospels provide a multifaceted and

comprehensive portrayal of Jesus' life, teachings, and significance. As scholars of Jesus' life, we must start with our primary sources, the canonical Gospels.
