Importance of teaching biblical principles/values in the classroom
The topic of teaching the bible in schools is a hot debate in schools. I feel that this has been true for a very long time. There may even be an argument about how to teach about values and principals. Do you have to use the bible, should there be a curriculum created, or is it the responsibility of the parent? The bible can be a great resource to reference when teaching about values and principals. With our ever-changing education system, I sometimes feel that maybe we
should start bringing back teaching about principles and values in school. Many students are not being taught at home and left to learn on their own. After reading though an article in Education Week titled Four Reasons Why You Should Teach About Religion in School, authors Anthony Jackson
,
Rev. Mark E. Fowler
&
Marisa Fasciano
, it is understandable why many feel that religion is important in schools. The article stated religiously motivated hate crimes are on the rise. When someone does not understand something or disagrees it can lead to crime. With what we see in the news with the conflict going
one can led students to misunderstand and develop hatred toward a religious group without understanding that it is not the entire group that has the same view.
School student bodies are becoming more diverse. Our foreign-born population is growing. This is brought many different religious into our schools’ systems. If we do not understand a student’s values or religion, we could offend someone unintentionally. If religion is taught in schools, we could see a shift in student behaviors. Psalms 7:16 His wrongdoing will come back to him, and his violent behavior will come down on his head. The bible support many of the saying we as teachers use in school now when speaking to students about behaviors. I am beginning to feel that saying a prayer in school should become the norm.
Even allowing students to have time to read through their chosen religion books would be beneficial to students because they can find meaning in the words they read. Biblical principles being taught in a public school.
According to the U.S. Department of Education Section 8524(a) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by Every Student Succeeds Act and codified at 20 U.S.C. § 7904(a), requires the Secretary of Education (the Secretary) to issue guidance to State educational agencies (SEAs), local educational agencies (LEAs), and the public on constitutionally protected prayer in public elementary and secondary schools. In addition, section 8524(b), codified at 20 U.S.C. § 7904(b), requires that, as a condition of receiving ESEA funds, an LEA must annually certify in writing to its SEA that it has no policy that prevents, or otherwise denies participation in, constitutionally protected prayer in public elementary and secondary schools, as detailed in this updated guidance. The First Amendment prevents government from establishing religion but does protect religious exercise and expression without government interference. In a school setting teacher, coaches, administration may not lead a school in prayer. Students may not be forced into prayer but are able to pray themselves. Employees of a school any does not impose their religious beliefs on students and should not bring their views into the school. I understand it as, yes you can be religious and pray but you can not to this at school. If you have a moment you may pray with on your own, but you cannot have students pray with you. No matter what side you are on this will forever be a hot topic. Even though out this research there have been so many views, laws and information about this subject. Corinthians 1:19-20 says, “There is no room for worldly wisdom that raises itself up against the knowledge of God.” Godly wisdom and worldly wisdom cannot co-exist. One will
inevitably dominate the other. Maybe we should be working towards being able to co-exist instead of trying raises against the other.
