Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A.
Summarize: Acts 19:11–22 describes how Paul was allowed to perform miracles through God by curing people of illnesses, diseases, and casting out evil spirits. The people of Ephesus started to emulate the deeds of God as a result of Paul's work becoming popular. A demon possessed individual attacked and injured the Seven Sons of the leading Priest Sceva as they were mimicking God's work to cast out a demon. "I know Jesus and I know
Paul, but who are you?" the demon asked the Sons of Sceva. The consequences of using the names Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in vain became widely known to the Jews, Greeks, and residents of Ephesus. Numerous believers appeared, confessed, and demonstrated their actions. Many of them who also practiced strange arts collected their books and set them on fire in front of everyone. When they calculated the cost of all the books, they discovered that it was fifty thousand silver pieces. In this way, the word of God multiplied and gained ground. Paul was compelled by the Holy Spirit to travel to Jerusalem, Rome, Achaia, and Macedonia. Paul remained in the province of Asia for a little while longer, sending his two assistants, Timothy and Erastus, ahead to Macedonia.
B.
Identify: Acts 19:11–22 serves as a theological illustration of the power and authority within the name Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
C.
Check: The Acts 13-28 MacArthur New Testament Commentary notes that, “Not only did Jesus have the authority to cast out demons, but He also had such absolute control over them that He could forbid them to speak.” (John p.158) There is supernatural power within the name Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. God gave Paul the authority to heal the sick and cast out evil spirits. Paul’s ability became popular causing exorcist and imitators to believe they can do the same work without God’s permission. The Seven Sons of High Priest Sceva attempted to cast out an evil spirit with the same authority that Paul preaches, but were brutally rejected by the possessed. The evil spirits stated, “Lord Jesus I know and Paul I know, but who are you?” The Seven Sons of High Priest Sceva were unable to control the evil spirit. One man possessed by an evils spirit overpowered all Seven Sons of Sceva leaving them naked, wounded and fleeing for their lives. In addition, John also states “The name of Jesus is no magical charm to be used by whoever wants to use it, as these exorcists soon learned the hard way.” (John p.164) It became well known among the Jews, Greeks, and Ephesians that the names Lord Jesus Christ and
the Holy Spirit should not be used in vain. Many of them confessed publicly and ended their false practices.
