Discussion Thread: Questions About The Bible
Squares:
1.
“People regularly purchase tickets to a movie that runs an hour and a half or
longer. They will sit and watch the movie until the credits roll, without losing
interest, getting bored, or walking out” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 35). I
personally know people like that and those same people tend to complain about
or have difficulty sitting through church services for the same length of time and
are quick to lose interest in listening to the sermons or end up leaving early.
2.
The stories of the Bible tell of how God is seeking to rescue, redeem, and restore
the lost world from the beginning of time up until today. Galatians 1:4 says Jesus
“
gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the
will of our God and Father” (NIV).
3.
The further we read into the Bible the more we realize the depths God will go in
order to save humankind. While we are prone to straying, God is eager to pursue.
We encounter this pursuit of grace all throughout the Bible. Since we could not
reach God with our own efforts, He reaches down to us.
4.
Our obedience to God’s commands is not the basis for our eternal position with
Christ. God grants eternal life to all who believe in the gospel of Jesus (Romans
1:16). Our works have no bearing on our salvation (Titus 3:5).
Triangles:
1.
It is best to use a Bible with the same translation your pastor uses on Sunday
morning to preach so that it is easy to follow along and stay interested in the
sermon. This strategy allows the audience to stay engaged the entire length of
the sermon and helps to remember what was preached well after the service is
over.
2.
Sometimes, church practices can have an improper impact on how we interpret a
biblical passage. We must seek to weigh what we see and hear against what we
read in the biblical text.
3.
Individuals who consistently feel lost in the church also assume the Bible is hard
to understand and follow. This is why people become disconnected from their
church and end up leaving the church or even their faith.
Circles:
1.
How does participating in a religious activity shape one’s understanding of
biblical scripture? How does religion play a role in shaping a person?
2.
With so many different translations of the Bible written over time, how do we
know which translation is the most accurate?

“The new creation that God promises means the removal of that which broke us
on this side of heaven. The broken will be replaced by the new. We will
experience a life we have never known. One that is free from death, grief, crying,
and pain” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 45).
