Week 3 Reflection Role of the Holy Spirit and The Baptism of the Holy Spirit In 2-3 pages reflect on the following questions Required Reading Stott Ch 5 1. What percentage of the required reading did you complete? 100% 2. What was the most important concept you learned from the reading? Use in-text citations for any quotes or concepts. The main idea from Chapter 5 of Stott's "Positioned for the Gifts" is that to effectively use spiritual gifts, especially prophecy, it's crucial to be open and ready to receive insights from the Bible. The key concept is about being a serious student of the Word of God, understanding its context, history, and language differences. Stott emphasizes that only having intellectual knowledge of the Bible is not enough. It's essential to also let the teachings of the Bible deeply impact your heart. The chapter stresses the need to strike a balance between studying the Bible intellectually and connecting with it on a spiritual and emotional level. The author uses the example of a prominent figure, Dick Mills, to highlight how a prophetic ministry is rooted in the Scriptures. Stott quotes John Wimber to emphasize that a combination of the Word of God and the Spirit of God is vital for personal growth. The chapter also discusses the living and powerful nature of the Word of God, quoting Hebrews 4:12, which means the Bible can deeply impact our thoughts and intentions. A personal story at the end illustrates how the transformative power of the Bible can be evident in different cultural contexts. The takeaway is that being receptive and hungry for the Word of God is crucial for its ability to change lives. 3. What was the most important concept you learned from this week’s lectures? The most crucial concept learned from this week's lectures is the distinction between being baptized in the Holy Spirit and receiving the Holy Spirit as part of the initial salvation experience. The lectures emphasized that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a subsequent and separate event, where the Holy Spirit comes upon believers, baptizing them with power. This occurs when a believer, who has already accepted Jesus Christ, specifically asks for and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit promised by the Father. The lectures also highlighted the scriptural basis for this understanding, referring to Acts 8:15- 17. Additionally, it was emphasized that after initially believing in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to reside within believers, quickening their spirits and making them alive to God. This internal indwelling represents the believer being born of the Spirit. 4. What do you have questions or confusion about, or want more clarity on? None to be honest. It was nice understanding that receiving and being baptized by the Holy Spirit were two different things though.
