Topic 2 DQ 2 Research and describe at least one benefit of incorporating play into instruction in a birth to preschool classroom and at least one benefit of incorporating play into instruction in a K-Grade 3 classroom. Taking into consideration your two classroom designs, describe one play-based learning strategy that could be implemented in your birth-preschool classroom design and one play-based learning strategy that could be implemented in your K-Grade 3 classroom design. One of the benefits of incorporating play into instruction is that the students are eager to learn from each other and socialize amongst each other. Bringing play-based learning to a classroom creates balance, deepened learning, and defined classroom community as a place where they could all learn and grow together (Arrow, 2019). The first classroom is a preschool classroom and having the learning centers is not a problem for implementation of play-based learning. I only make sure that I group my students and send them to the correct center because then if I don’t all the students will go only to certain centers and will miss out on the opportunity to learn from the other center areas. Then will miss out on the opportunity to play with others. The second classroom is a kindergarten classroom and play-based learning is difficult to put in place because of all the requirements that the students need to complete. I may not have centers set up, but I would implement “Brain Breaks” (dance to music). Then I would direct a time for them to do STEM learning activities. I would have things for them to build or put together. Students who experienced play-based learning were more focused, motivated, and purposeful (Arrow, 2019). I feel that even though kindergartens don’t have learning centers the students are happier when they get “Brain Breaks” or STEM learning time. Reference: Arrow, J. (2019). How to use play for learning. Play-based learning helps engage elementary students in their education and has cognitive, physical, social, and emotional benefits. Edutopia.
