PUBH 122: Case Study Stress Management Plan Name: ____________________________________ Ysabelle Eustaquio PUBH 122 Health Psychology Dr. Carol Mansyur Case Study Part 2: Stress Management Plan This is not a test; it is a survey. The objective is to help you to start thinking about the stress you experience in your daily life as a student and to learn coping strategies. Your grade depends on the completeness and clarity of your responses (see rubric). For short answer questions, add or delete space as needed. You must answer all questions, but be succinct and to the point for short response questions. Do not delete or change any of the questions. Just type your responses where indicated. You should need between 2-3 pages to complete this part of the case study project, with a maximum of 4 pages for the whole document. Stressors 1. Which of the following are stressful to you? (Highlight all that apply.) a. Achieving high grades b. Frustrations with partner, boyfriend or girlfriend c. Anxieties about roommate and living situation d. Demands made by parents e. Finding affordable housing f. Other economic concerns g. Deadlines for papers, projects, or tests h. Worries about alcohol, cigarettes, or other drugs i. Balancing job, school, and/or parenting responsibilities j. Internet and/or video game use k. Anxiety about recent violent crime incidents on or near campus l. Medical condition(s) of self, partner, or close family member m. Other (Specify): _____________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ 2. Chapter 6 of the textbook describes several physiological and emotional reactions humans typically experience in response to stressors. Based on this information, think about, and very briefly describe your personal sensations, using the following questions as guidelines: a. How do you know when you are under stress? i. When I started to shake, or I suddenly feel cold or I suddenly have a stomachache. I think the part of me feeling cold reflects on what we read about some stress response that present on the scope within Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome. b. What does stress feel like to you? i. Stress feels like a temporary thought of fear about what’s going on and not being able to handle it the way I know it. c. How does stress differ from anticipation, excitement, and other emotions? i. Stress differs from anticipation in a way that when you are anticipating something, you have an idea of what is about to happen. Stress, for me, is the feeling tha t we have whenever we do not have an idea how and/or what’s going to happen. Excitement differs from stress in a way that excitement often associated with positive emotions such as happiness.
PUBH 122: Case Study Stress Management Plan Name: ____________________________________ 3. Which three stressors from the list above seem to increase your stress levels the most? Identify your key stressors, noting people, places, events, and patterns of thought and behavior that seem to cause you the most stress. a. The 3 stressors from the list that increases my stress levels the most would be: deadlines for papers, projects, or tests, economic concerns(such as being able to pay credit or tuition), and balancing job + school + other responsibilities . My key stressor would be the deadlines because my professor has not been consistent with keeping up with the original schedule of deadlines and lectures to give so my patterns of thought were always divided to keeping up with the deadlines and submitting quality work. Sometimes he would change the deadlines on the last minute so that adds to my confusion to which project should be a priority. Stress Management Plan 1. Go to https://www.csus.edu/experience/student-success/student-support-services/ and identify one or more campus resources that you might find helpful for managing your stress. a. ASI Food Pantry this is a one stop shop for free groceries for Sac State Students. This helps a lot when it comes to easing my financial burden for groceries. Food does alleviate my stress on multiple occasions. 2. One important step in strengthening emotional health is building a support system. List up to three people in each of the following categories (relationship or first name only): a. Who would I call if I needed support? i. Deejay (close older friend), Max(childhood best friend), Neriva(high school best friend) b. Who can call on me for support? i. My close friends for years (including 3 persons above), Karlo(brother), newly met friends c. What relationships could I develop to increase my support system? i. I could develop more on having an actual romantic relationship and more friendships 3. Identify one or more coping strategies/stress reduction techniques from Ch. 7 of the text that you can use to design a realistic plan to manage and/or reduce your stress response when encountering similar situations. List them below. a. Emotion- focused coping defines the efforts one’s made to regulate their emotions when a stressful situation arises. An example of an emotion-focused coping practice would be meditation and journaling. b. Proactive coping possesses three concepts: (1)ability to detect or anticipate potential stressors,(2)skills for coping the stressors, (3)having skills to control or manage the stressors.
PUBH 122: Case Study Stress Management Plan Name: ____________________________________ 4. Briefly describe your initial Stress Management Plan below. Include the key, targeted stressors, the stress reduction and/or coping technique(s) you will use from Chapter 7 to try to reduce your stress, and rewards, if any, you will give yourself for using the techniques successfully. You will be implementing this plan starting Week 9. INITIAL STRESS MANAGEMENT PLAN: o KEY: Managing stress on upcoming deadlines on school works o TARGETED STRESSORS: anxiety from submitting 2-3 sets of quality homeworks from different classes on-time o STRESS REDUCTION/COPING TECHNIQUES: Give myself a focused 2-hour timeframe of just focusing on finishing my homeworks. After 2-hour timeframe, regardless of the status of the homework(finish or unfinish) giving myself a break(emotion-focused cope like meditation or taking nature walks to silence my mind) away from computer to avoid burnt out and overthinking the homework. Preferrably, at least 1-2 homeworks would be finish to give myself a highly-preferred reward.
