David Entwistle Book Review: Chapters 8-11 Liberty University CORINA FEZI-ALVA FEZICORINA@YAHOO.COM Entwi stle
SUMMARY In his book (Entwistle,2015) "Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity," Author David Entwistle dives deep into merging different aspects of Christianity with psychology. Entwistle sets out to define integration as the synthesis of the teachings found in the Bible and the observations of God's creation. He believes that the Bible is God's word and that His works reflect His acts worldwide. However, Entwistle acknowledges that to integrate these two distinct components successfully, we must have a comprehensive understanding of both religion and psychology. More than merely knowing one area or the other will be necessary. ( ENTWISTLE, D. 2015) The Models Throughout the book, Entwistle explores six different models of integration. These models are presented as ways in which individuals may seek to connect and reconcile the teachings of Christianity with the principles and theories of psychology. The first model is the "Enemies" approach, which views psychology and Christianity as opposing forces. This perspective sees one as a threat to the other and advocates rejecting psychology or Christianity. Entwi stle
The second model is the "Spies" approach, where individuals attempt to infiltrate one field with knowledge from the other. This approach involves borrowing concepts and ideas from one discipline to enhance the understanding of the other. However, it can also lead to a disregard for the unique contributions of each field. The third model discussed is the "Colonists" approach. In this model, one discipline dominates the other, often resulting in the complete assimilation of one into the other. This approach can limit the richness and depth of both disciplines. The fourth model is the "Rebuilders" approach, where individuals seek to reconstruct Christianity and psychology, creating a new perspective incorporating aspects from both. This approach can be challenging as it requires significant effort to redefine foundational concepts and principles. The fifth model is the "Neutral Parties" approach. This approach aims to keep psychology and Christianity separate, acknowledging that they do not have to be integrated for someone to have a well-rounded understanding of each. While this model may preserve both disciplines' integrity, it also risks creating fragmented worldviews. Finally, the sixth model is the "Allies" approach, which seeks to create a strong collaborative relationship between psychology and Christianity. This model acknowledges the value and contribution of both disciplines and fosters a respectful dialogue between them. After discussing these six models, Entwistle recommends his favorite integrative solution. He suggests the "Allies" approach offers the most promising path forward. ENTWISTLE, D. psychology and fostering a collaborative relationship between them, individuals can draw upon the strengths of each discipline to enhance their understanding of human nature and behavior. This approach encourages dialogue, integration, and critical thinking, allowing individuals to navigate the complexities of life with a more holistic perspective. INTERACT Entwistle's book gives both sides of the story, psychology, and Christianity, and it goes into depth with both beliefs. Entwistle had a fantastic talent for combining and synthesizing years of disagreements between the two fields. And Entwistle had a vision of a beautiful integration. For me, Christianity is the most essential part of what I believe. Implementing both in practice is very important because we need the psychological and Christian knowledge to properly help treat our clients and help them see things from different perspectives. We must stay neutral without pushing our belief system on the clients. The Allies model was my favorite model out of them all because it went into full detail in its explanation, and it really helped me understand that you can combine the two, and it has a great outcome as well. I believe, as with anything I do in this world, that no matter what it is, the Lord believing in God will always accentuate no matter what you do because if you believe in God, you can do anything you put your mind to. Also, God can remove all negativity from your life as well. APPLY This book opened my eyes to a bigger picture of psychology and religion and changed my perspective on appreciation. Psychology and Christianity, hand in hand, will be a game changer for clients and counselors. I believe God can use me as a counselor to do his work and fix people. I will be using all the models and being cautious because I know I will be dealing with believers and non-believers. I will not judge people for believing differently or push religion on them. In conclusion, "Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity" by David Entwistle explores the integration of Christianity and psychology. The book emphasizes the importance of comprehending both disciplines to merge them successfully. Entwistle presents six models of integration, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each. Ultimately, he recommends the "Allies" approach as the most promising for fostering a collaborative and integrated understanding of human nature. Entwi stle
