Module Five Video Reflection Josh Garrin spoke about his individual personality traits that have contributed to his social change identity while highlighting the psychological concepts of emotional intelligence, empathy, and compassion relative to his authenticity (SNHU, 2021). Garrin suggests that his social change identity is greatly attributed to the personality traits that allow him to be self- aware, such as introversion. Throughout the video, he frequently related the importance of empathy and compassion in social change. Garrin suggests that compassion and empathy provide individuals with the tools to understand and sympathize with others, encouraging individuals to develop a more comprehensive understanding of their identity, resulting in self- actualization or authenticity (SNHU, 2021). Garrin frequently made correlations to self- actualization theory by substantiating that in the journey to reaching our authentic self, the driving forces for personal growth and development are implemented through self-reflection, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, empathy, and compassion. Premising on self-actualization theory and Susan Fiske’s Core Social Motives, my motivation for understanding is one of the most vital skills to my success in personal and professional goal orientations. I have an innate drive to push myself and challenge my thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, and morals. By challenging myself to strive for greater, I consistently seek understanding in the everchanging world, as well as within my actions, thoughts, and attitudes. As individuals and professionals, self-reflection is a vital tool in discerning how we as individuals contribute to social change and individual success. Despite this, the presence of emotional intelligence or understanding promotes a more comprehensive grasp of social change and individual identity as it correlates to individual success. The more we understand, the more knowledge we seek, and we, as individuals, become more readily able to remain open-minded and sympathetic to other individual's needs, wants, and desires. As we reflect on these 2
