PSY 7610: U07a1 1 U07a1: Evaluation of Tests Materials, Scoring, and Technology for Three Tests Maha Haroon Capella University PSY7610: Test and Measurements Dr. Michael Gontarz November 26, 2023
PSY 7610: U07a1 2 Introduction During week two, the three tests I chose were in relation to children with learning deficits. It’s important to note that even though these tests are mainly used for children with autism, my goal, as a future LCP in Clinical Psychology, is to use these tests to help children with other behavioral disabilities. The tests I’ve chosen were Verbal Behavior Milestone Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP), the Assessment of Basic Language and Leaning Skills- Revises (ABLLS-R), and The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS). According to the official site of VB-MAPP, VB-MAPP is a widely used language and social skills assessment program for children with autism or other intellectual disabilities. The VB-MAPP can provide parents and professionals with the information necessary for developing IEPs that target the right skills at the right time (AVB, 2023). In hindsight, Meadow’s Mental Measurements Yearbook Review has also stated that the VB-MAPP is used with children with autism who have language-related deficits (Meadows & Sheperis, 2017). ABLLS-R was Developed by Dr. Partington, the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills - Revised (The ABLLS-R®), is an assessment tool, curriculum guide, and skills-tracking system used to help guide the instruction of language and critical learner skills for children with autism or other developmental disabilities.” (Partington, 2023). Another review for the ABLLS-R, has states that the intended population for this assessment is with children with autism (Gokiert, 2021). Lastly, Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS) Provides a systematic way to evaluate, track, and teach functional, adaptive, and self-help skills so that individuals with autism or developmental delays can become more independent (WPS,2023)
PSY 7610: U07a1 3 The similarities between these tests are the focus on children with autism and intellectual disabilities/behaviors. As I continue my path to become an LCP, and a future Clinical Psychologist, working with children I will use these tests to understand behavioral deficits. Evaluation of Test Materials, Costs, and Administration Times Like most tests, you need materials. Some of these tests have different materials than others; as I research on these tests, they all have different materials that will help me become successful in using them. For the first test, The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills – Revised (ABLLS-R), it’s available in a book, as well as an electronic version. With both versions, the assessment protocol and the scoring instructions are included. However, the difference with the electronic version is that there is more that comes with it. With the electronic version a practitioner can generate multiple different reports, generate graphs, and view 200+ videos that give examples of how to administer the assessment (Partington,2023). The cost of the test varies depending on which version you choose. According to the Mental Measurement Yearbook, the ABLLS-R costs $64.95 for the ABLLS-R Protocol and the ABLLS-R Guide (2010). The ABLLS-R publisher website shows for the electronic version it is $100 for the first year per seat, and $60 per seat for each renewed year (Partington, 2023). The ABLLS-R also comes with a Spanish set, and a Spanish protocol, which can be used with bilingual professionals, and bilingual individuals. When purchasing the Material for the VB-MAPP, the price of the protocol alone is $24.95, the guide alone is $49.95, the protocol and guide bundled together are $69.95 and the app costs $15.99 (AVB, 2023). Both are hard copy formats, which is different from the ABLLS- R since it has an electronic version as well. According to the publisher, T he VB-MAPP is currently available in 12 languages: Arabic, Castilian Spanish, English, French, Italian, Korean,

PSY 7610: U07a1 4 Lithuanian, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Mexican Spanish, and Turkish (AVB, 2023). The difference between this test and ABLLS-R, is that it is untimed; t his is because administration time varies according to the test subject’s skill level and amount of cooperation (Meadows & Sheperis, 2017). Lastly, when purchasing The AFLS materials, the starter kit, which includes Functional Living Skills Guide; 1 Basic Living Skills Assessment Protocol; 1 Home Skills Assessment Protocol; 1 Community Participation Assessment Protocol; and 1 School Skills Assessment Protocol (Note: Vocational Skills Assessment Protocol and Independent Living Skills Assessment Protocol are not included in the Starter Set), is $179.95 and The AFLS All Assessments, which includes everything, is $249.95 (WPS,2023). Among the three tests, The AFLS is the most expensive, because it focuses on independent skills in different areas, which requires a lot of materials. The AFLS publisher has qualifications guidelines on who can take this test, and the level that is needed is Level B: which a bachelor’s degree in psychology or another related field (WPS, 2023). In my understanding, the two other tests didn’t specify the qualification level to administer their tests. I found this to be helpful, as I can presumably start using this test in a career-related setting. Although each test has its different uniqueness, I’m leaning towards AFLS and ABLLS- R, as it aligns with the age group, and what I want to be working with in the future. Although AFLS is pricey, it does provide a nice guideline to help individuals become more independent, which is what I want to work with.
PSY 7610: U07a1 5 Evaluation of Scoring Procedures and Interpretation Guidelines Each of these tests has its own scoring criteria. The VB-MAPP is scored correctly if an adult observes the behavior or can evoke it on demand. Scores of 0 points, one-half point, or 1 point are awarded for each skill. Scores at each level are approximately balanced (Meadows & Sheperis, 2017). VB-MAPP also uses technology through an app, which can score it quickly and easily. The app also can automatically generate graphs and charts of the data and generate automatic reports of the data included (AVB,2023). Having this type of tool can make assessment, scoring, and interpreting a lot easier, since you won’t have to spend a huge amount of time scoring it yourself. For the scoring for ABLLS-R, in the protocol book, each task item is presented as a unique row with the same column headers: task number, score range. There is task objective, question that can be asked about a child’s skill, examples of responses, criteria for each score, and notes. Ratings are transferred to tracking system grids, in which the scorer shades in the number of boxes that corresponds to a child’s score for each task item (Carney & Gokiert, 2021). Since this assessment uses an electronic version as well, it was extremely helpful and saved users of the test a lot of time, as the test sums up all the information and can categorize it depending on the type of report you want to print out (Partington, 2023). Lastly, for the scoring of AFLS, it’s completely different than the two tests. This test is based off Criterion-related scores. For each task, participants will learn how to conduct an AFLS assessment and transfer the results to the skills tracking grids. An emphasis will be placed on helping parents, other caregivers, and educators identify and prioritize functional skills that their learner needs to develop. Additionally, practical, and easy to implement methods will be discussed to help learners develop these skills without taking more time than is currently
PSY 7610: U07a1 6 required to perform these tasks. By identifying and prioritizing some learning targets for daily activities, a quick and significant impact on an individual’s ability to independently perform specific skills can be made. A major emphasis will be placed on learning how to break down tasks into easy‐to‐teach steps (task analysis) (Partington, 2013). It’s also stated on the AFLS publishing site, that just like the ABLLS-R, it also has an online scoring system that can create accurate reports within minutes. In these three tests, individuals are tested with everyday social, behavioral, and independent skills, each of them there are different levels, depending on the person. All three tests scoring guidelines are easy to understand and to interpret for a therapist, school staff, family, or friends, etc. The scoring of all three tests creates reports, for a successful behavior plans for that individual. Evaluation of Test Technology As we advance in the technological world, we have more use for it nowadays compared to 10-20 years ago. Each of these tests have paper formats and electronic formats. For instance, VB-MAPP has created an app for those that are using the test; the app itself can automatically generate graphs and charts of the data and generates automatic reports of the data included (AVB, 2023). The ABLLS-R has a web-based version of their test, which sums up all the information and can categorize it depending on the type of report you want to print out (Partington, 2023). This also saved time for parents, therapist, and school administration. As for the AFLS testing, they also use online software, which helps with scoring and reports, which has also saved time for individuals who have given this test.

PSY 7610: U07a1 7 Based on all three tests, they all use an online format that can quickly and accurately sum up the scores and provide reports on the spot. As technology advances, the way tests are administered also advances, which provides a sense of relief to individuals administering the tests, as they can receive and analyze the scores and reports.
