A case conceptualization is a report that is written by a counselor to explain presenting problems, establish goals, plan interventions, and identify expected outcomes. As you review this week's Learning Resources and media file, note techniques and interventions, and consider the role of a person-centered counselor in planning treatment. Further, reflect on person-centered therapy with respect to developing your own theoretical orientation. In what ways do you find that person-centered therapy resonates with your own point of view? To Prepare: PERSON-CENTERED COUNSELING: CASE CONCEPTUALIZATION RESOURCES Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Take note of language and techniques used by the counselor that are specific to this theory. Review the Psychoanalytic Case Conceptualization Example found in this week’s Learning Resources and use this document to prepare your initial Discussion post. Select one of the case studies presented in this week’s Learning Resources, and answer the following points as if you were a person-centered counselor. Use your Learning Resources and the notes you took on language and technique from the person-centered expressive arts therapy video to support your conceptualization and integrate examples from the case to support your post. Include the following: Presenting Problem Hypothesis Treatment Goals Identification and explanation of at least two techniques and interventions Expected Outcome Post your person-centered conceptualization. Be sure to support your main post with specific references to the Learning Resources using proper APA format and citations. Your response posts may be more conversational and less formal. Read your colleagues' postings. Respond to at least two of your colleagues' posts and explain whether you believe the proposed case conceptualization is the most beneficial for the case selected and why. Your responses may be more informal than your main post. Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights that you have gained as a result of your colleagues' comments. BY DAY 3 BY DAY 5 Unread Subscribe

Keep up the great work. Client and Theory/Theorist : Name your client (from the case study you chosen- it is okay to use the same case study overview in the presenting issues if you stay with the same client- (I recommend this but it is not mandated) and the theory of the week. ******** This week we’ll engage with Person-Centered Counseling! It’s all about the relationship. NOTE: Expressive Arts are NOT a theory of counseling, it is a method to deliver the theory. Dr. Rogers is using Person centered theory as a foundation for delivering expressive arts. For example, I can use person centered, Gestalt, Reality, CBT etc. theories and use play therapy to enact/practice it with kids. So, you would not use expressive arts as an intervention you would use the traditional interventions from person centered theory. I know your video speaks to expressive arts, but Dr. Natalie Rogers is using Person Centered theory to guide her in the work. Hope that makes sense. Ask a question if not! :) * No citations necessary Presenting Problem : Describe the client (name, age, gender, ethnicity, family, etc.) and the client’s issues in terms of how you perceive problems/issues (e.g., client exhibited symptoms of anxiety – pressured speech, tense features, agitated or restless). Be sure to include contributing factors. * No citations necessary

If you are posting for person-centered, provide evidence from the case that suggests the client is living incongruently..hint hint on 1 of the major constructs. Be sure to always relate how you see the client though the features of the Person-Centered Theory. *YES , you must integrate (and cite) a minimum of 2 major constructs and/or model of human nature into the case study hypothesis area from Chapter 7 in our main textbook . Goals: Here you will discuss the goals for the presenting problem discussed above and why you would focus on them: (i.e., decrease anxiety, depression, anxiety, anger, etc.) AND state one of overarching goals for Person centered theory. One of Roger’s overarching goals for the theory is movement from incongruence to congruence- there are others (you are welcome). *YES , you must still integrate (and cite) 2 sources from our main textbook section that discusses goals of the theory. Interventions/Techniques: This week choose a minimum of 2 from the following interventions : Active Listening, Reflection of Content and Feelings, Immediacy, Genuineness and Self-Disclosure. Intervention 1: First, name and define the intervention, then explain your method and why it would be useful for your client in meeting goals according to this theory. Intervention 2: Do the same for the 2nd intervention as noted above. *YES , you must integrate (and cite ) 2 sources from our main textbook section that discusses goals of the theory- One for each intervention should suffice, but if you want to integrate more, than you are welcome to do so. Expected Outcome: The goal of xxxxx therapy is … . Explain what outcome(s) you hope to achieve for your client using the interventions above. Support your thoughts with citations from our textbook and/or other resources. *YES , you must integrate (and cite) 2 sources from our main textbook section that discusses expected outcomes of therapy. References: List your references here. Remember you must cite and reference the chapter author(s) NOT the editors of our textbook.

You can use you overview of the presenting issues as long as it does not contain any theory specific information. In this theories class, we are surveying and exploring how some different theories are applied to case studies i.e,. Adlerian, Person-Centered, Existential, CBT, Narrative etc. So, what this means is that while the case study presenting issues can remain the same as previous weeks, your hypothesis, goals, interventions and outcomes will necessarily change because these areas change based on the theory we are studying each week. Imagine theories are like cakes or pies if you like. Not all cakes taste the same due to the different ingredients, right? A chocolate cake uses, well chocolate, and a strawberry cake uses strawberries, and a vanilla cake uses vanilla. Still, while some cakes have layers, and others are single layer, and some cakes use flour and some do not and so on and so forth. The ingredients will change, but it is still called a cake. And you can’t get a delicious dark chocolate cake using vanilla ingredients-their natures are different : ) The theories cake (ingredients) are the hypothesis, goals, interventions, and outcomes in this class. Can you imagine just throwing together a bunch of ingredients to make a sumptuous cake without a recipe and/or experience as a baker? You may get lucky and have it turn out great, but chances are you will get something that will not be delicious. Hope that helps and I am not sure about you all, but I am craving cake just about now.
