Now that you have studied all the different theories of psychotherapy, what theory do you feel has the strongest approach for the population you may want to work with? Do you think that you will need to learn more than one approach? Why? Specifically for me, I want to work with children. I am working towards being a school counselor, therefore the therapeutic approach I am picking is based on the idea that they may grasp it better. There is definitely a need for me to learn more than one approach as each child is different and requires different needs and services. Knowing this I believe the strongest approach may be solution focused therapy. I say this because it is goal based. Most the time the students possess the means to succeed in the classroom setting but they just may feel anxious or are unaware of their strengths. As stated, "A small, positive change raises our clients’ confidence, and buoyed by the counselor’s support they begin to believe that they can create more changes" (Murdock, 2017). Meaning, that with the help of a counselor and goal setting, these students can see quick results that may entice them to continue to make positive changes in the classroom setting. This therapeutic approach is short lived which is beneficial because as a counselor in a school setting, you may be the only one present for 600 + children. A quick relief will benefit you and the students. This will also be better for the student because they can quickly go back to a positive learning environment. Murdock, N. L. (2017).
