Now that you have studied all the different theories of psychotherapy, what theory do you feel has the strongest approach for the population you may want to work with? Do you think that you will need to learn more than one approach? Why? Throughout some learning in my bachelor's program, fast-forwarding to now, I have always been drawn to cognitive-behavioral therapy. It is a solid yet straightforward approach and can be seen as effective with adults struggling with various issues. Cognitive-behavioral treatment can tackle a variety of difficulties, such as depression, anxiety disorders, addiction, marital dilemmas, and eating disorders. Throughout different studies, CBT has been proven to provide significant results, even more remarkable than some other therapeutic approaches. CBT focuses on core principles such as psychological problems relating to unhelpful ways of thinking and learning patterns suggesting poor behavior. This approach involves changing thinking patterns, such as helping individuals realize their thinking process is causing them difficulty, learning a better understanding of behavior, using problem-solving skills to cope vs. what has been used prior, and learning to be more confident in one's choices and abilities. Changing behavioral patterns also involves individuals facing their fears, implementing role-playing to play out possible problematic interactions, and learning how to calm one's mind and body to achieve success (Luklanoff & Haidt, 2018). I will need to know more than one approach as excellent Counselors are knowledgeable beyond what they must be. It's essential to learn more than one therapeutic approach as individuals differ in their journeys with mental health and may need different methods to ensure a successful outcome. Murdock, N. L. (2017). Theories of counseling and psychotherapy: A case approach, 4/e (4th ed.). Pearson Education.
