What is an example of psychological “syndrome” that may be introduced as evidence by a forensic psychologist? In what situations might using this psychological “syndrome” be valid or not? Explain using scholarly support. According to Slobogin (2010) psychological syndromes may be used as evidence in various legal settings as it can be used to explain the behavior of a victim or offender. Some examples of psychological syndromes that may be used in cases include rape trauma syndrome, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), battered women syndrome, or XYY syndrome (Slobogin, 2010). These could be used to support an individual’s rationale behind their actions to remain innocent or plea for insanity (Slobogin, 2010). A high-profile case that comes to mind that the psychological syndrome was invalid is the Jeffrey Dahmer case. The insanity defense was used as a plea for his case despite his horrific crimes to multiple victims; however, the judge ruled Jeffrey Dahmer as sane due to the fact that his crimes were premeditated based on him choosing specific victims and continued to engage in these activities (McEvoy, 2023). Jeffrey Dahmer tried to blame his childhood and parent’s separation for his behaviors, but it was determined that he was aware of his actions while committing his crimes to 17 victims (McEvoy, 2023).
