Jena Suh PSY 3100-01 10/12/23 Chapter Reflections 7 One concept that I have learned in this chapter is persistent depressive disorder which is also known as dysthymia. Persistent depressive disorder is a state chronic state of depression, and the symptoms are the same as those of major depression, but they are less severe. This last for two or more years and an individual is never without symptoms for more than two months. It can lead to outcomes such as social isolation, high suicide risk, and mislabeled as moody or difficult. This made me feel surprised because depending on which country you live; your stress can depend on it which leads to depression. For example, living in Finland, you will still receive some financial money even though you take some days off from work and you wouldn’t lose your houses which can reduce your stress away from your head. Due to this, there are lower depression rate in European countries compared to other countries. One example of this concept is a case of a 60-year-old male in Japan who was diagnosed with dysthymia disorder. He had some sleeplessness and malaise that has persisted for about 5 years despite treatment with antidepressants. He worked at a bakery as a full regular employee, and he was neither smoking nor a drinker. He went to clinical examination, but nothing was found or had not had anyone features indicating dementia. Due to his symptoms, he did Kamiuntanto (KUT) therapy for 12 weeks and his sleeplessness and malaise improve his symptoms. After KUT therapy for 12 weeks, he was relieved from dysthymia, and he was able to commute every day. Another concept that I have learned in this chapter is suicide. A suicide is the act or an instance of taking one’s own life voluntarily and intentionally. This made me feel shocked to see how these suicide attempts can happen at any age whether you are young, adolescent, or elders. One example is my sister who used to do deliberate self-harm as a suicide attempt. I remember that time when she was in 8 th grade, and she was always so quiet but was very stressed out. She had cut scars on one of her arms and she told my mom and I that she used scissors to cut herself to relieve her stress that she had. We didn’t know she felt like this until we saw the scars on her arm. My mom would cry in the bathroom, and I would comfort her as an older sister that everything would be okay. After a talk with my sister, everything went back to normal and that she felt safe because she realized that everyone is supporting her. After learning about this concept in class, I’ve realized that those times must’ve been really hard for my sister and that it was hard for her to cope everything by herself.
