1 Critical Reflection Paper Three: Schools of Psychology, Part 2 Shannon Cheeseman 1179997 University of Guelph PSYC* 3000: Historical and Critical Perspectives on Psychology Professor Angélica Nascimento de Oliveira October 23rd, 2023
2 The readings from the prior week have been a source of immense fascination for me. I have absorbed a wealth of new knowledge. The lessons from this week have expanded my knowledge and provided me with a fresh and profound perspective on the historical significance of psychology, both in the past and present. As a result, these discussions with my peers have stirred a sense of healthy skepticism within me, prompting a critical examination of the information shared on diverse subjects. We covered the history of clinical psychology, how psychology became a valuable field, and this whole nature vs. nurture thing, especially with autism. It's made me realize how complex these topics can be. These conversations have shown me that critical thinking and questioning what we know is super important when exploring the world of human knowledge. Clinical psychology in the years after the war was challenging for many veterans, specifically the first three years after they were discharged. I found this clinical psychology topic extremely fascinating because that is where it all started. The early stages of the psychology clinic were challenging to develop. Poor working conditions, low morale from the war, understaffed, and accumulating mental health problems. It was difficult for anyone to get any "break" from PTSD or mental issues. This made me dig deeper into how historical psychology has affected the start of clinical psychology. Clinical psychology in today's society is one of the best platforms to help those with mental problems and an excellent way for new research topics to be brought into institutions. In today's society, clinical psychology is essential in improving mental health issues and a more considerate way of adapting to the changing environment. This brings me to the next important point I learned much about throughout this week's discussions.
3 The debate surrounding nature versus nurture has long been at the heart of understanding human development and individual differences, and it is particularly pertinent when considering conditions such as autism. Nature contributes by influencing the genetic factors that make a person more susceptible to autism. At the same time, nurture involves the impact of a child's upbringing, social environment, and early interventions, which, as we know, can significantly affect the course and manifestation of the condition. I learned that it is crucial to balance nature and nurture so that they work out in my favor. The article that stood out to me was the one about refrigerator moms. This article brought out a new perspective that my peers and I discussed on a deeper level. It made me realize that not everything you learn or read is accurate and that it can harm mothers and how they raise their children. That was based on scientific research and more personal opinion. To conclude, I have learned a lot of valuable information about how clinical psychology and nature vs. nurture can change dramatically over time, which is an excellent example of historical psychology. As well as understanding that, with a lot of research and persistence, something like clinical psychology can evolve to become one of the more fascinating aspects of today's society. Having the opportunity to discuss each topic with my peers has once again made my understanding of each topic much more significant to how it is impacted through historical psychology. As we continue this course, I am starting to see a pattern of how historical psychology is the first step to how things have evolved over centuries, like clinical psychology, nature vs. nurture, etc. The knowledge I gained throughout this course has also made me much more appreciative of how hard those different psychologists had to work to get a name for themselves just for today's society to learn.
