Cla ssi fica tio n: Sch wa b Int ern al ARA18 1) What are the three uses of 'is' discussed by Place? How is 'is' used in the statement "consciousness is a process in the brain"? Place discusses “is’ as the “is” of identity, the “is” of predication, and the “is of constitution. “Is” in the “consciousness is a process in the brain is used as the “is” of identity, which means that consciousness and a process in the brain are the same thing. 2) To the best of your ability, explain the phenomenological fallacy in your own words. Phenomenological fallacy is the mistake of assigning properties of our perception of an object to the object itself. An example would be perceiving the sky as blue. The phenomenological fallacy would say that the sky itself possesses the property of ‘blueness’, when ‘blueness’ is a product of our perception. 3) To the best of your ability, explain eliminative physicalism. Cite the text as part of your answer. Eliminative physicalism is a view that denies the existence of mental states. It also suggests that our mental states are nothing more than physical states of the brain. “As the name suggests, this view eliminates all reference to mental states…It argues that there are no such things as mental states like beliefs, desires, and so forth” (Cunningham, pg.27). 4) What is one problem that Cunningham raises for physicalism? Cunningham raises the problem of explanatory gap. Explanatory gap is the difficulty in explaining how physical processes in the brain and yet we lack explanation of how these processes result in the subjective experiences.
