2 There are a couple different treatment options throughout SCI Rockview that is either optional or required for inmates to participate in depending on scores that were received upon entering prison. Just like other prisons this prison also offers Alcohol and Other Drug treatment programs. These programs are specifically for inmates that have drug and alcohol problems. This is a program that can be used in prison or be continued on the outside. There are also voluntary self-help programs, Alcoholics Anonymous and narcotics anonymous, which is assisted by AOD. The next treatment program is Thinking for a change targets inmates who have poor decision-making skills. This program is a 25-session program that helps inmates work on social skills, problem solving skills, and cognitive self-change. Then there is a program that is called Violence prevention. This program provides inmates with the appropriate skills needed when dealing with tendencies towards violence. This program is a cognitive behaviorally based program that uses modeling, role-playing and tabletop exercises to achieve the goal of the program. This program has 2 intensity levels which provides each individual with the correct number of sessions that they need based off various scores from when they first entered prison. The moderate intensity provides 26 sessions, and the high intensity provides 58 sessions. The last program that is available to inmates that are not voluntary is Batterer’s Intervention. Batterer’s Intervention is another program that is targeted specifically towards men who batter women. This program will challenge the batterer’s beliefs and behaviors which cause them to batter women.” There are eight themes which are addressed: Non- Violences, Non-Threatening Behavior, Respect, Support and Trust,
3 Honesty and Accountability, Sexual Respect, Partnership, and Negotiation and Fairness” (Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. 2023). The goal is for inmates to identify their intent, actions, beliefs, etc. Upon identifying their reasoning for battering women, they will be given the opportunity to work on communication skills and turn their aggressive behaviors into assertive behaviors. This ability will be achieved through role-playing, modeling, homework assignments, and participation. According to the 2022 recidivism report recidivism has basically remained flat over the past 15 years. The overall recidivism rate is 40.0% within 1 year of release and 64.7% within 3 years of release. There are some rehabilitation programs that work and some just do not work at all. The cost of recidivism is roughly $3.1 billion in Pennsylvania. On the positive outlook on recidivism in Pennsylvania the ranking is lower than the nation average.
