Vital Signs: HR 110, RR 24 BP 140/72, Temp 94.8 oral, O2 sat-93% Introduction: Frances Cortez is a 18- year- old single, Hispanic, female college student. Presents at student health services. Chief Complaint: " I knew everything. I made stupid mistakes. I couldn't think when I took the test." History of Chief Complaint: Frances experienced severe anxiety after failing a test one week ago. The student had never had trouble academically before. She felt she knew all the information, but became extremely anxious when the professor emphasized how important the test was. She couldn't focus on the test questions. Later, when talking to her adviser, her chest tightened and she felt her heart pounding and started sweating profusely. Past Psychiatric History: History of minor anxiety in high school. Denied any history of panic symptoms. No history of any psychiatric hospitalizations or treatment. No history of eating disorders or self-interec vst behaviors. This is an unfolding case study which we will be utilizing for this discussion Questions: 1. Based on your readings and in regards to Frances' history what additional questions do you have? Provide rationale for each question. (Have at least 3) 1. When did you first notice you were anxious? It is important to understand when the patient first started to have anxiety. This can tell us if this is a recent development or has been ongoing. It is also important to understand this because it gives us a timeline. 2. What makes your anxiety worse? Understanding what makes anxiety worse for the patient can help tailor patient education regarding certain stress management techniques. It also helps us to understand the situations in which anxiety may be higher so we can discuss methods to help manage anxiety provoking events. 3. What makes your anxiety better? This is important to understand because it gives us an idea of what coping skills the patient already has or doesn’t have. This can lead to the correct patient education to help the patient better cope with anxiety.
2. Frances is cry and wants to understand why this happens to her? As her nurse what information will you give to her regarding anxiety? (Elaborate on at least 3) 1. I would explain to Frances that she might be experiencing uncontrollable crying spells due to her anxiety. Crying helps to make a person feel better but is uncontrollable. This can be paired with other symptoms that includes: racing thoughts, sweaty palms, panic, trouble sleeping, and more (Norris, 2018). 2. Crying is a natural coping mechanism in the body which can help with emotional release. Not crying takes energy which can increase the feeling of anxiety (“Crying for No Reason: Causes, Solutions, and More,” 2023). 3. Crying spells could also be a sign of depression. Depression is a mental health condition that consists of a low mood that lasts weeks to years. Other signs of depression include: anger, irritability, poor concentration, sleep problems, and more (Zoppi, 2023). 3. Explain the Clinical Course of anxiety to Frances. Include any cultural considerations. (Elaborate on at least 3 concepts) 1. Asd 2. Asd 3. asd 4. What education will you provide for Frances regarding mental health promotion? 1. I would provide education about exercising regularly. Exercising releases endorphins which can feel good and increase a person’s sense of well-being ( Stress Relievers: Tips to Tame Stress , 2023) . This also give the patient a chance to socialize with others that are also working out. 2. Education about stress management techniques such as self- care, journaling, and eating a balanced diet would be provided. Self-care includes doing things such as going for a walk, getting a massage, exercising, etc. This can help reduce stress and improve the quality of life. Journaling includes writing about feelings during the day. This can also be a guided activity to target specific topics for the patient (Rd, 2023). Eating a balanced diet can help reduce anxiety. Having a balanced diet helps your body regulate stress and mood. If there are deficiencies in your diet, the body is unable to regulate stress as well (Rd, 2023). 3. I would also provide education regarding relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation. By meditating, the patient can be given a sense of calm and peace (Rd, 2023). Yoga is a series of postures and breathing exercises. This can help bring peace to the body and mind by helping to ease stress and anxiety (Rd, 2023). 5. Frances states " I think I have exam phobia." What education will you provide about phobias?
1. I would explain to Frances that a phobia is persistent fear of an object, animal, activity, situation, or person that is unrealistic (LeWine, 2022). These are limited and specific. For example, arachnophobia is the free of spiders (LeWine, 2022) . I would elaborate on the difference between a phobia and anxiety. Anxiety is feeling extreme worry and tension. This can include feelings about school (LeWine, 2022). 6. Add a Module 7 PHARMACOLOGICAL question: After you have analyzed the content from the discussion board, please add a question to the end of your initial post regarding the reading material for the week.
