Evolutionary Psychologists (EP) have some researching and arguing they need to do, if they people to believe in their theories. We were not put on this planet just to reproduce. Furthermore, humans are not the same as other animals, like lions. Furthermore, if humans are only born to reproduce, then why are there homosexuals? EP’s have also stated that step-parents are 100 times more likely to abuse their step-children, because they do not share the same genes as them (Gantt & Melling, 2016, p. 28). However, there are a lot of children abused by their biological parents. Why would a person who has been genetically programmed to want to reproduce, and only raise their own biological children, want to be in a relationship with a person who already has children? That would create a situation where there would be a 100% death rate for step-children. Another statement EP’s have stated, is that feelings, like love are immaterial, involving an individual’s hormone, Darwin’s theory of natural selection (Fikes, 2001, p. 348). David Boss has explained that women want to select older men; however, women wanting to be with older men can be explained many different ways (Gantt & Melling, 2016, p. 28). If the statement was true, then I would not be married to a lady who is many years older than myself, and additionally, I have a close friend that is married to a lady who is years older than himself. We are not “thinking meat” as some EP’s have reduced us too. There is another approach EP’s like to believe, and that is nihilism. To believe that our lives are lived without meaning and purpose is disappointing to hear (Gantt & Melling, 2016, p. 29). Especially when those who are proclaiming that our lives have no meaning or purpose, are using their knowledge and expertise to show that their life’s work has meaning and purpose. Using the explanation that the body is made up of cells, which align to perform specific tasks, reinforcing the belief of nature over nurture, leaving every person with “reasoning instincts” (Fikes, 2001, p. 355). Born with just a blueprint and instincts to react to what the body produces through its normal functions, of chemicals and hormones. Although, why do some people have the ability to play an instrument, or become an All-Pro Hockey player. This is the reasoning of applying experiences, biology, beliefs and abilities to create and have a purpose in life. Finally, think about how we distinguish between good and evil, right and wrong. If the only purpose is to reproduce, with a male that is older than a female, then why is there the sense of morality within each person. Wouldn’t this make rape acceptable? If the only purpose is to reproduce, then why do we seek out mates to remain with for long periods of time? EP’s make the human experience as one that is similar to living a life as a robot, but only put on earth to reproduce. Question: I asked a lot of questions throughout the forum. Those are my questions, this week. References Fikes, T. G. (2001). Evolutionary psychology as computational therory in the cognitive schiences. Journal of Psychology and Theology, 29 (4), 340-359.
