COUNSELING CAREER 1 Counseling Career Paula Jordon Psyc2320- Introduction to Counseling and Psychotherapy Teresa Smith July, 2023
COUNSELING CAREER 2 Counseling Career One career path that I have considered pursuing is a mental health counselor in the state of Washington. According to Kottler & Shepard (2014) making the decision to become a counselor can be a complex choice and people have varying reasons behind choosing this career path. They have stated that when making the choice to become a counselor, it is vital for the individual to be completely honest with themselves on the reasoning behind this career. In this paper, I plan to explore the specialization of mental health counselor, job requirements, the job settings, and the reasons why I have chosen specifically to become a mental health counselor. Counseling Specialization Summary In the world of psychology there are several different career paths someone can take with the multitude of specializations available. According to onetonline.org, a mental health counselor will have to provide assistance with emotional health and try to prevent future mental health issues. On Indeed.com ( Therapy Experts Jobs, Employment in Marysville, WA | Indeed.com , n.d.) there is a position open currently that is working remotely as a mental health counselor, where they provide support in making healthy life choices and achieving client’s goals. This could range from helping someone with childhood trauma, martial, self-esteem and many more issues. A mental health counselor would talk to their clients about what is happening in their lives, have them express and understand their emotions, and help them understand their relationships with themselves as well as others. They would help guide treatment plans for their clients to build and maintain life skills to deal with their problems and prevent them. To be able to accomplish these tasks, the counselor will need to establish relationships with their clients. To be able to do this, they will need to be able to observe, listen and read people to understand the

Job Requirements Depending on the specialization of counseling, the requirements for the position can change. According to doh.wa.gov the degree requirement to become a mental health counselor in the state Washington is either a master’s or doctorate degree in behavioral sciences and a mental health license. To be able to qualify for this license, they will need 3,000 hours or 36 months of supervised mental health counseling by an approved mental health counselor. These hours are broken down with needing 1,200 hours of direct counseling with clients and 100 hours of immediate supervision. Another requirement is needing 36 hours of continuing education that includes at least 6 hours of both ethics and law. After 2014, they started requiring mental health counselors to also complete 6 hours of training in suicide assessment, treatment, and management that is repeated every 6 years. The counselor will also need to pass one of the two exams, National Counselor Exam (NCE) or National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Exam (NCMHCE) to be able to receive their license. Job Setting and Population Served When working as a mental health counselor it is possible to work in a multitude of career settings. One possible career setting is working remotely for Therapy Experts ( Therapy Experts Jobs, Employment in Marysville, WA | Indeed.com , n.d.) as a mental health counselor. This would mean working with clients online either via chat or video. This could mean you could serve a wide range of clients and communities needing support in setting short- and long-term

COUNSELING CAREER 4 goals. Another possible career setting would be someone working as an individual and family counselor, they would be helping with the same kind of clients just in an office setting. However, according to the job posting for Therapy Experts they do not handle people in life-threatening or crisis situations. A drastically different career setting is working in a substance abuse center or a mental health facility where clients are struggling with addiction, behavioral disorders, or suicidal tendencies. Personal Goals and Career Alignment Kottler & Shepard (2014) stated that people enter the world of psychology for a variety of reasons and this is true for myself as well. One of the reasons that I want to become a mental health counselor is because I want to be able to help people overcome the struggles that I know that others and myself have struggled with. This would be helpful because I believe in a way it will be helping me save myself by knowing that I am not alone in this world, and many others struggle with similar burdens. This career aligns with my goals because I find it fascinating to know and understand why people are the way that they are, and this would give me a deep understanding of that. Working as a mental health counselor could also help me be able to set a schedule that can be flexible which is a professional goal of mine. I agree with Kottler & Shepard that having a career where you are able to use what you learn in your clients lives as well as your own is beneficial. Conclusion In conclusion, becoming a mental health counselor would allow me to help others by providing support and by trying to have them learn skills to prevent future issues. This would allow me to not only fulfill both a personal goal of helping people, but also a professional goal of setting my own schedule. There are several different requirements to becoming a mental health
COUNSELING CAREER 5 counselor including getting a minimum of a master’s degree and qualifying to get a license by taking an exam and meeting the required experience. In this type of career as a mental health counselor it is possible to work in a variety of settings and communities including individual and family services, remote, mental health facilities and substance abuse centers. Even with a specification as a mental health counselor, a career could look very different compared to someone in the same specialization.
