I think the aspects of Gestalt Therapy that I see most likely in alignment with my future career as a School Counseling is the multifaceted elements of it, how pliable and adaptable it is. It seems like a collection of all of my favorite parts of different theories, so the title is so fitting. It is, however, very complicated and intimidating. I like the idea of taking all input the patient communicates – both verbal and non-verbal – is considered, and the co-pilot nature of the client- clinician relationship. I really relate to the metacognitive awareness and empowering and supporting the client to notice their own patterns and to participate in change making through experimentation. In addition to the adaptability, the considerations of existential questions, is the flexibility for the client and therapist to incorporate different values from all REC Identities because “[t]here may be multiple realities of equal legitimacy. Such a view of the nature of reality opens Gestalt theory to a variety of formerly disenfranchised voices, such as those of women, gays, and non- Europeans” (Wedding & Corsini, 2019, p.317). That is an essential element for public school counselors, especially for high school students who are just beginning to understand their realities and all the sociopolitical external forces and how that shapes their realities. Of course, as a teacher, every day I see in my student /clients their learning and personal growth; therefore, it really resonated with me that Gestalt “[p]sychotherapy is primarily a relationship between a patient and a therapist, a relationship in which the patient has another chance to learn, to unlearn, and to learn how to keep learning” (Wedding & Corsini, 2019, p.327). This is very literally what I see in my students, and what teachers try to get teenagers to actively participate in every class. References Wedding, D., & Corsini, R. J. (2018).
