2 PSY 108 Project Two: Behavior Change Blueprint Part 1. Set a Goal My goal is to pay off my student loan debt within the next 5 years. Part 2: Apply Self-Assessments Coping Strengths I scored vey highly on the proactive coping scale (50 out of 56). In my younger years, I didn’t know much about coping skills, not to mention, setting any type of goals for myself. However, when I was prematurely forced into adulthood, I quickly learned “To use this strategy effectively, you need a specific set of skills that includes planning, goal setting, organization, and mental simulation” (Aspinwall & Taylor, 1997). Since graduating with my Associates Degree, I opened up a saving account specifically for paying off my student loan debt. However, effective organization skills and goal settling weren’t present. I was putting money into the account but taking it back out to pay other bills instead of having the account blocked from withdrawal usage. Learning from my previous mistakes, I’ve since opened up a saving account through my credit card which only allows for deposits into the account and automatic bill payments only. This controls money coming in and out of the account that’s specifically set up for my student loan debt repayment plan. (“Proactive Coping,” 2020) I scored lowest on the Emotional Support Seeking Scale (7 out of 20) and Avoidance Coping (7 out of 12). I struggle greatly with seeking support of any kind from family or friends because they are not emotionally available for me when I need them. Which lead to me also scoring low in Avoidance Coping simply because I tend to either procrastinate or completely avoid a problem when I’m feeling overwhelmed or defeated. Although I don’t have a strong support system from family and friends during troubled
3 times, I can also reach out to other resources from community organizations and churches for financial counseling, assist in implementing effective planning strategies/goals and emotional support as well. (“Big Five,” 2020) Grit I scored a (45 out of 50) on the grit assessment. I believe that I’m more grittier than 90 percent of American adults see themselves. I had a tough life growing up. I was forced to become an adult at the age of 16 yrs. when I became homeless. There was absolutely no time to cry and woddle in my situation. I was forced to practice proactive coping skills and become an immediate problem solver to get myself out of that situation quickly. However, in times of being overwhelmed or stressed out, I will often take the escape route and procrastinate in taking care of my responsibilities. This is something I must be mindful of when paying of my student loans debt. I plan to utilize my grit to increase motivation and encouragement to successfully complete my goal of paying off my student loans debt. (“Grit,” 2020) One of my main strategies towards completion of this goal is to set my monthly payments on autopay and use any extra money towards the debt to lower the balance. Another strategy is to eliminate distractions and temptations to spend frivolously on unnecessary items. The grit is all about one’s perspective on how to approach set goals and achievements by reminding myself ” Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality“ (Duckworth, 2013). Personality Traits The personality traits I believe will be useful in helping me to schieve my goal is opennes and emotional stability. I am curious by nature andlove asking questions, being willing to learn new

4 things from a different approach. When I’m not feeling defeated, stressed or overwhelmed, I tend to view life from a positive perspective. Being emotionally stable will help me to remain stabilized towards reaching my goal of paying off the debt from a rational/logical standpoint. My high score in openness means I’m open to change and variety, I like to look at life’s challenges through optimistic lense. Also, mastering the ability of having emotional stability means I’m able to approach reaching my goal with stride and encousagement to remain focused on the end result. Posessing these two personality traits will be a great benefit to helping me remain committed to my goal of paying off my student loans debt. Part 3: Integrate Concepts How I Can Use My Strengths to Overcome My Weaknesses I believe my grittiness will help me overcome the temptation to go shopping, spending money that I can’t afford to lose. I sometimes act upon a ‘want’ verse a ‘need’ when in the shopping malls or grocery stores. Instead of approach these places without a shopping list, I can use my gritty nature to approach these places with a list of necessary items and a planned spending budget. Once I go over that planned budget amount, all other items must be return back to the shelves. This will help me remain focused and on task in reaching my end result to becoming debt free from student loans.
