Mood disorders and suicide Student name Institutional affiliation Professor Course Date
Contemplating suicide and grappling with depression are weighty concerns that demand thoughtful attention. There is a pressing need to delve deeper into the prevalence of mental health disorders, given that nearly one in five Americans grapples with depression. A thorough exploration is necessary to fully comprehend the intricacies of these challenges, particularly as initial evidence hinted at a shared etiology for bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, warranting further investigation. The impact of mental health on physical well-being is evident in various manifestations, such as negative emotions and sleep disturbances. Anxiety can induce profound distress, highlighting the intricate connection between mental and physical health. Bipolar disorder, often referred to as manic depression, is characterized by extreme and abrupt mood swings. A comprehensive evaluation of this condition requires consideration not only of pharmaceutical interventions but also of neurological aspects and genetic predispositions. Symptoms of a manic episode include insomnia, an overwhelming compulsion to stay constantly busy, and difficulty concentrating. A 2020 study by Miller and Black underscores that individuals discontent with their lives may be less inclined to seek help when needed. Accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder necessitates the ability to differentiate between hypomanic and manic episodes. Antidepressants
are typically not the primary course of treatment for individuals with manic depression due to the potential risk of inducing mania. Effective management of mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder and major depression, often involves a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Advances in medical research have rendered various forms of mental illnesses treatable. The anticonvulsant Tranylcypromine has shown success for many individuals with bipolar disorder. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States reports that suicide ranks as the second leading cause of global mortality, surpassed only by natural disasters. Individuals grappling with mental health challenges are more prone to contemplating or attempting suicide. Providing crucial assistance to those facing mental health struggles is imperative.
