Learning Story- Birthday puzzle activity 30/05/2018 Fatima was playing with the building block at construction corner on her own when she looked over at the puzzle table that there were new puzzles being added to the table, so she walked over, looked at all the puzzles and picked the very hard puzzle where it has 3 layers and a lot of puzzle pieces complete the puzzle also the picture of the puzzle was of the bird cycle and how birds grow. She climbed up on the chair, turned the puzzle over and started placing the pieces in the spots where they belong. She had a few difficulties find the pieces, where they go and which pieces on the layers. I assisted her a little bit, but she said, “I want to do it myself”. Then Wissam came over to the table and started doing the puzzle with her. Fatima just looked at him and doing it together putting some pieces as well. She completed the puzzle and responded “I finished it. The birds are in their nest now. By doing this puzzle activity children developed reference to the Vygotsky’s 1. Allows children to learn that a whole is made of parts. 2. Develops hand-eye co-ordination and fine motor skills. 3. Builds visual-perceptual skills. Develops attention, concentration and thinking skills such as recognising, remembering, matching, sorting and problem so. Elf: Learning Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners Follow ups: Provide more challenging puzzles Have a look at different type of birds Watch a documentary on birds. Principles Practices Respect for diversity Learning though play International play This activity is a group play. Children using language skills by communicating with each other.
